Win 7 not recognizing NIC
« on: May 09, 2015, 06:15:43 PM »
Had a clients computer stop being able to access the internet. The integrated adapter was no longer recognized. Tried reinstalling drivers, tried installing a pci network card, tried installing a usb wireless adapter. Safe mode with networking didn't work. Booted with a Knoppix 6.2 CD and the integrated network adapter was recognized and accessed the internet through the existing cable and router. This identified the problem as win 7 issue. (for info sake it is 64 bit and the network adapter is a broadband gigabit 57XX)
Earlier this evening tried a registry hack to remove the network/config key and rebooted. The adapter reinstalled itself and is now working after finally obtaining an IP address through DHCP.
I know posting this after finding a solution is unusual, but three days of trying different things suggested on-line led me to register before finally solving this. I can give anyone having this problem a step by step for the registry hack and maybe save them some time.

What was the registry hack exactly? I am curious what it was, that way I can see if it would be useful in my windows repair program :-)

1. Download the latest adapter driver version to the computer. USB from another machine since you can't get on line.
2. Run Regedit
3. Locate and export the registry key;
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control|Network and back it up using File\Export menu item just in case...
4. Delete the registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control|Network\Config
The subkey is REG_BINARY
only delete the subkey
5. Run Device Manager, expand Network Adapters, right click the network adapter you want and click: Uninstall. You don't need to uninstall the driver.
6. Restart the computer. If you deleted the driver go to 7 when windows tells you it failed to install the driver
7. Install the drivers you downloaded and copied.

It took a while to find this solution on-line, but it worked perfectly for me on a Windows 7 64 bit box. Hopefully it will help those who experience this issue.

It would probably be easier if you posted it. Being new to this forum, not sure where that is. Always good to have a source of fixes when you run into problems.
