Help portforwarding in netgear wnr 614
« on: May 09, 2015, 03:37:11 AM »
Help! I have followed your tutorial on port forwarding and have used your port tester but it keeps saying port is closed.
I even tried an online port tester and it still says closed. My router is a netgear wnr614.

You posted in digimerge section, is that what you are having trouble with or did you post in the wrong section?

Post 2 screen shots for me.

1. A screen shot of the port forwarding page in the router
2. A screen shot of the results of my port tester program.

Lets go from there

OK good, the port forwarding rule looks good. Make sure DMZ is off in the router as well.

Also look at the Internet IP the router has, does it match the IP on this page?

Most people dont realize their modem from their ISP is also a router, so we can tell based on the WAN/Internet IP the netgear has.

Provided that you own both routers, one of the possible fixes is addressed at http://www.pcwintech.com/how-setup-two-or-more-routers-together-port-forwarding-port-triggering

Ok.

Based upon what type of NAT router your netgear wnr 614 is:

Step 1: Physically find your netgear wnr 614.

Step 2: Find the WAN port of it.

Info: WAN port could be called Internet or To Modem port.

Step 3: Report back what the brand and model of the device that is connected at the other end of the wire that is connected to the WAN port of the netgear wnr 614.

Based on the IP, it doesnt look like a local IP so that means your ISP has you behind a 2nd network on their end, which means port forwarding isnt going to work.

Most ISPs do this because they dont have enough internet IPs to hand out to everyone. So the trick is to buy a static internet Ip from them, if you are able to. In order for them to give you a static internet IP they have to take you out of that 2nd network

Oh, Thank you Shane
But, is there any way to get a static ip for free?
And is it possible to port forward on the 2nd network?

Nope, because your ISP controls both of those

Ok. So, the only way I can port forward is if I buy a static Ip form my ISP?

P.S. Thanks for the help
