Hard Disc Troubleshooting

Well I finally got back to this but found the item closed -- so a new one but same thing. I dis the chkdsk c: /F /R  I got something along the lines of "Access denied as you do not have sufficient privileges. You have to invoke this utility running in elevated mode". At that point I either did a power off or a restart (don't remember) but when it came back up it went into the utility. It ran with no error on the C disc. So I reran on the D disc only it wasn't really a hard disc just a DVD but it ran. In fact I ran it twice more on each. Everything was fine. BTW I finally figured out my mouse problem was really a USB hub problem. Mouse working fine now and Windows loads just fine.

It turns out that my other hard disc is actually E. So I tried to invoke chkdsk utility to run on the E disc. I now have the same 'access denied' as before but no matter what I do I can't get it to run. I brought up 'users' from the control panel and checked -- I have administrator privilege.

What to do?

Did you make sure to right click on cmd.exe and run it as administrator?

LOL. It would be nice if a question like that was preceded with "did you forget to...". That way we both could pretend that I actually knew to do that but just forgot instead of acknowledging that I am just a twit. But anyway, that worked of course but I'm not sure of the results. That thing runs a long time and when it's done it just goes away and I am looking at the logon screen. Is there some way to tell it to stick around or to log the results where they can be perused?

Well I found the event viewer but didn't see a log. Perhaps you can tell me a bit more.

So in the "Find What" block I tried chkdsk and Chkdsk. Hit "Find Next" but it never showed a log.

Based on your other post about i/o devices errors I would say the hard drive is bad. :wink:
