TCP Port Failing
« on: August 11, 2014, 01:17:26 AM »
I, like the many people here, am having trouble opening a port.
I've created myself a static IP, and port forwarded whilst following the instructions of this and various other websites. (You guys are the best though. ;)
Using your port tester tool, and the simple portforwarding tester tool (since the tester tool said the latter was more accurate.)
Both tell me my TCP port is not forwarded.
I've disabled the IPv4 firewall on my router, and have even set rules in my windows firewall to allow the port, in every way possible. (no effect)

I've taken a screenshot showing the tester tools, and my router's management page:

I've ran out of ideas, and could really use your knowledge and past experience to help locate what I'm obviously missing.

Did you make sure to have minecraft closed when you ran my port testers? because windows only lets one program listen on a single port at a time, so if minecraft was listening on the tcp port them my port testers would fail.

Yes of course, there was no minecraft server/game running whatsoever. I even shut down my PC and started it back up again before doing another port test, to make sure that there would be nothing to run on the port in the background.
And it's not only my minecraft port, it's all that you see on that list. (in the picture) none of them test as open.

OK so, all test you do UDP comes back just fine yet all TCP ports fail. Who is your internet service provider and I will google them and see if they block tcp ports

That would be Comcast Cable Communications, Inc.

I already did a background check and didn't find anything saying they block the ports I'm using, but maybe you'll come up with something.

Ok good, and there are no rules on the single port forwarding page or the port triggering page correct? Also DMZ is off? (We want Yes to all 3 of those )

OK, then we need to find out if the problem is something on your system or something with the router.

To test that we need another computer. I want to setup a test port forwarding rule to another computer, say port 1979 and run my port tester on it.

If TCP comes back as open then we know the problem is on your system. If TCP fails and UDP still works on the 2nd system then we know it is something with the router

Welp..... It seems to be my machine.
I port forwarded with my mac's local IP, and when I tested, it worked just fine.

I'm using the ethernet adapter for my PC (the one that doesn't work), would that effect it in any way?

No, that wouldnt effect it.

Normally when it is something on your machine it is normally firewall related. Sometimes it is the Windows firewall, or if your antivirus has a firewall in it, or if you had a 3rd party firewall installed at one time but removed it, sometimes parts of it are left behind that are still blocking things.

Thank you so much!
It was my ZoneAlarm Firewall. I hadn't even considered it... Thank you.
