Installing Windows 7 with CD(s)
« on: June 01, 2014, 06:20:22 PM »
As addressed in my other thread, I sort of solved the issue,

I came to one of my other computers that I know that has a DVD drive and sure enough, while I did not install Window 7 I got it to work.

While I see it is possible to install using an USB stick, as addressed at

http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows7/a/install-windows-7-usb.htm

I was wondering if it possible to install Windows 7 using CD(s).

Thank you

Yes installing Windows off the dvd disk is totally fine. The only time I ran into problems was when the dvd drive itself simply didnt like the disk or was bad.

But I always do the USB install if I can because the USB can read the data so much faster than the dvd and so it makes the install go faster :-)

#1 By CD, I really mean one of my Dell computers does not have a DVD drive.

#2 So, you recommend installing by USB. Ok, I will look into it...

Ok, I will try this again but a little bit different.

#1 Can I

a) Take the DVD and make an ISO image file,

b) then split that ISO file into smaller files that are less than 700 MB (what fits on a CD) so that I do not to add a DVD Drive OR use USB?

#2 If so to step b, how?

#3 If not to step b, does MS offer a pack of CDs that I can use?

Thank you.

No that wont work.

No they dont. The reason why is the install for windows on the dvd is a .wim file that is a few GB in size. It isnt split up into multipl files like the older versions of Windows where.

You have to use a dvd or a usb thumb drive.
