Dir-655 limiting download speeds
« on: January 24, 2014, 05:14:50 PM »
Long time no see, happy 2014!

And with a new year comes new internet problems.  I've got the same router as It's been working pretty well since we last talked, however, we just upgraded out internet from 25/6 to 50/12 for download and upload speeds.

We used to get 28/6, now we get 4/12.

It's weird as all hell and I can't figure out what the problem is.

I hardwired to the modem and got 58/12, so it's definitely not the modem.  I've been looking around forums and all of them say that it's a qos/wmm/wish problem, but all of those are disabled on my internet.  Pretty much out of ideas here and would love to get some help.

Thanks,
Tyler

Ok, the modem is not the problem.

When you tested behind the router...

#1 Did you use a wired or wireless connection?

#2 If you used a wireless connection:

a) Do you have a computer that you test the wired speed with?

b) What kind of wireless ( B, A, G, N ) ?

b) What level of wireless security ( "Wide Open /Not secure", WEP, WPA ) ?

#3 Where all of the other turned computers off?
Private messages (PM) are not for support questions or for hints to not yet answered topics. The PMs are basically for confident conversation between the users, off the forum.

Both.

#2 If you used a wireless connection:

a) Do you have a computer that you test the wired speed with?

Yep, still just as slow

b) What kind of wireless ( B, A, G, N ) ?

I used two wireless computers, they both connected via N

b) What level of wireless security ( "Wide Open /Not secure", WEP, WPA ) ?

I use WPA2 AES

#3 Where all of the other turned computers off?

No, but if my slower connection could handle it, this new one should be able to.

By the way, I should update that I enabled DNS Relay and I'm now getting 18/12, which is a huge improvement, but far from what we want.

So my parents decided to go out and buy a new router without asking me if it was good or not. They got a Linksys EA6500, which has TERRIBLE reviews.

However, now I'm confused, because we're getting 2/12.

So if the problem isn't the modem, router, or the wire (I replaced the wire between the modem and router when I set up the new router)

WHAT THE BALLS IS IT?!

Just posting to let everyone know that the problem was fixed. It was some sort of DNS problem and a simple reboot of both the modem and router fixed it.

I haven't tried to see if the old router works as well, I'm just not going to touch anything out of sheer fear.

Glad you got it working, not sure why DNS would cause a slow down, but at least you got it working again :-)
