Samsung Laptop is slow
« on: November 10, 2013, 07:56:34 AM »
Hey there again Shane! I'm currently having problems with my one year old Samsung NP305E5A - A05US.

One week ago, I was just watching youtube video then I went to eat breakfast leaving my PC on. When I came back, it was frozen. I had to force shut down it. Then next, it would not boot. I had to do a re-install which worked, but now, my PC is really slow. Sometimes the mouse would lag, the sound cracks, it takes a while to log in, the applications take a while to load. Then it was also using ~100% CPU. I went into safe mode and it was fast as it was before the freezing incident. I did some of the tips you gave the other guy and it kind of fixed my problem, but it is still slow and not as fast as it once was. My CPU speed isn't even at 100% anymore (after applying the fixes you gave the other guy in here with the HDD problem ) and my memory is not taking up more than 1.15 GB out of 3.94 GB. My HDD light is not staying lit though. It shuts off then you know, blinks here and there like normal. I really don't know what to do anymore. I need it fixed ASAP because I have something due on the 18th and I already lost a week because of this laptop. Thanks Shane!

If it runs fine in safe mode then it may be a program in the background doing it.

First thing I would try is to uninstall the antivirus and see if that makes a difference. I have seen a lot of AV's freak out and start slowing down the system. The AV doesnt run in safe mode.

Sad to see my favorite AV go, which is AVG.

I noticed a slight speed improvement, but it is still quite slow. I can't work on Photoshop.  :undecided:

I myself hate avg lol but as long as you like it that is all that matters. You can reinstall once we are all done :-)

OPen task manger, how many processes do you have running?

Also go to start and in the run box type in msconfig.

Disable any non Microsoft service you dont need and disable any startup item you dont need.

You also said you did some tips from I gave another user, I dont know which ones those where but if you havent run my simple system tweaker tool :-)

Lol. :P

51 processes are running.
Alright. I pretty much have only one non MS service on msconfig enabled and two others on startup.
Any recommended set-up for the tweaks or just keep it the way it is? I already went through the way it is but I don't know if you want me to change anything.
I also have your Mem tool running. :) I'm liking it.

Once again, slight speed improvement but it's still not as fast.
Photoshop is still laggy to a point where it is impossible to work with. Should I try PS in Safe Mode if possible?

Slow down may be at the limitation of the hardware as well. The hard drive is the slowest out of all the hardware.

Ahh. I'm trying to avoid any hardware replacement since I barely have $$$ with me. Is there anything else software related that we can try? Thanks for the help!

No matter what you do you will always be limited to what the hardware can do for you :-)

Once the price off SSD drives come down systems will be 5x faster. A 100mb/s drive to 500 mb/s and if your on an older drive you may only be going 50 mb/s for the drive. So your waiting for it to read the data when opening and running things. Thats why you will see the hard drive light fully lit up and cpu and memory are fine, your waiting on the hard drive when you see that.

Dang. Just wondering. Why did it just decide to slow down like right about now?

Hard drives get slower as they get older. Also the more programs accessing the drive the slower it will be as well. Thats why things run faster in safe mode, way less things running :-)

Btw, and good suggestions?

Not a whole lot left you can do :-)

You can only make old hardware go so fast, you will never be able to make it go faster then what it is capable of.
