WIFI Hotspot
« on: August 29, 2013, 01:00:54 AM »
Currently I have a Belkin wireless router hooked to DSL modem. One system has Ethernet wired to router. Two other systems use wireless to connect to router and out to internet through the DSL modem. Went to Walmart and I see this thing called a hotspot for WIFI connection. You can purchase or sign a contract for some data plan.

Some really BASIC questions:

Assuming  I get that hotspot gizmo and use a pay as you go card for Verizon data plan. Will my wireless router just automagically see that connection to the internet or do I need to do anything to the router? Do I need to disconnect the DSL modem? Where can I read up on the basics of this stuff?

Are you talking about this device? If you are or are looking at the same type of device then your router isn't in the picture at all and neither are your other providers. That device uses the cellular phone network instead of the more common Cable and DSL (and to some extent Satellite Dish). If you bought that then you would have a brand new wireless network in your house in addition to the one your wireless router already has. When you use your computer or tablet or any other wireless device to scan for a wireless network you'd see that device also. That particular one can have up to 5 devices connect at once and can be used anywhere the cell service works.

Does that help answer your question? I can look for some links if you need.

I was kind of viewing the "hotspot" as a cellular modem. Evidently I have the wrong picture, it is really a modem and router all in one. Yes? So I could just remove the current wireless router I have. Right? If I left my current router in place then we could just pick and choose which network to link in to. Correct?

That part right there tells you it is a cell internet plan.

Personally I hate cell internet. Think about how many times you been on a call and it sucks, now think of the internet that way, only reason to get it is if you travel and need to have internet at all times. Dont get it just for home use. They do give you a data limit on those plans.

Actually the plan would be to use the cellular as a backup for the DSL. We would eliminate the Hughes Net Satellite but continue to use DSL. Only using cellular when DSL had problems. What would you think about that?

I agree as well. It will make sense once you use it. You'll just have two completely separate networks if you have them both plugged in and you'll also have one you can use when you travel with a laptop or tablet. Just be careful with Youtube or other video...those will eat through your data limit.
