Port open, application not working
« on: July 01, 2013, 06:20:03 AM »
Hi there! You recently helped me with some ports :cheesy:, and today I had the chance to test the application I need them open for. The features related with ports 2000 and 4002 work perfectly, but the feature dependant on port 4000 continues just as it was when the port was closed. I sent them a screenshot of Simple Port Tester () to show that my ports are, indeed, open, adding port 4001 as control:

My ISP swears the only port they block is port 25, and the only firewall I currently have is Windows Firewall, and I switch it to inactive whenever I'm testing this application. I am at a loss for what to try now  What should I do?

None of the rules have 4001 in them, thats why it is failing :-)

If they can do port ranges like start and end port then doing 4000 in the start port and 4002 in the end port would do all the ports between those 2.

I don't think I was clear  :shy:
I do NOT need port 4001 for anything at all. I only included it in that particular scan to show other people your program (with which they are unfamiliar) works, and isn't just giving random positives for the ports I do need open (which are 2000, 4000, and 4002). My problem comes when running their software; the services that require ports 2000 and port 4002 work alright, but the service that uses port 4000 (which is forwarded in the same way the other two are) isn't working. In particular, this service would require the person connected to me to be able to see what I type, but it isn't working (whereas other services, like being able to hear them talk, work perfectly, but belong to the other ports).

Port 4000 is open and working

As my port tester page says
Quote
Most online port testers fail no matter what if nothing accepts their connection attempt. This port tester program will open the port on the system it is running on and listen for a connection from this site. So when the port tester program says the ports are open you can count that they are :-)

So if the port is showing open but your still having trouble with your other program then the problem may be firewall related.

The only firewall I have is Windows Firewall, which I disable for every test of this software. Why would a firewall target that specific port? And how do I find out if I have another one I'm unaware of? XD

You have to make their software is allowed in your firewall, not the port

Also a lot of antiviruses have firewalls in them, what antivirus do you have installed?

Well, part of the software *is* going through whatever is blocking the viewer from seeing me type, as I can hear them talk. I deleted my antivirus as part of the process to find out what was preventing me from forwarding the ports, way before I found out about your site c: So currently, none. That's why I believe my only firewall to be Windows Firewall, which I deactivate fully for tests (but is nonetheless set to allow all traffic related to this software, to the best of my ability).

Then it could be that their software needs more ports open then what they told you.

Just for a test, see if your router has a DMZ option. If it does point it to your computers IP. DMZ is a open all ports rule. See if it works with it.

It does have a DMZ option! I'll ask them for a new chance to run a test whenever they can, while being in DMZ, and I'll get back to you with that. Thanks! :)
