Unless something is tagging the crap out of your cpu then you should be running that slow. That means it is most likely the hard drive.

When booting up watch the hard drive light on the front of the case. Is it fully solid when booting and waiting? It may be time to get a new hard drive.

I recently got a new hard drive after my old one crapped itself.
As the laptop is launching, the hard drive light blinks for a bit, accompanied by noises sounding kind of like grinding (it's been like this since the upgrade). After that, the light goes solid, and stays that way.

Thats your slow down right there. Your drive is going as fast as it can. But how fast is the question. It is possible the the drive is going bad and isn't running at the speeds it should.

Which would explain the random temporary freezes you get. The system is waiting on the drive to finish reading or writing.

What hard drive model do you have it in right now?

1. Download the latest Piriform's Speccy. The program can pull up A LOT OF info concerning your laptop (including your harddrive).
2. As far as I know Speedometer needs Microsoft's .NET software to be installed. Do you have .NET software installed ?

My Speedometer doesnt need .net. It is made in VB6 not VB .net :-)

I would use the program willy suggested and get the actual model of the drive for me so i can look up the specs.

We will want to do a speed test on the drive as well to see how fast it can even go.

The specs look OK. Could you also post what's under the header "S.M.A.R.T." ?

In the good old XT days (early 1990s) one could improve read/write speed by optimizing the way the socalled "Interleave ratio" on the harddisk. I changed that ratio from 3 to 4 and my harddisk was about 3 to 4 times faster. But is that possible with the current generation of harddisks ? They are supposed to be "optimized".

Can CS Monitor help to solve this problem ?

5400 rpm? I hate those speeds. Very slow. Always try to stick with 7200 rpm if you can.

I am really thinking your drive needs replaced.

Get me screen shots of the results of these two programs for me :-)

Bad sectors, but smart status. Bad drive bud.

Time to get yourself a new one :-)

And this time get a 7200 rpm :-)

These are the ones I get for customers and has a 5 year warranty :-D

Thanks for all the help, but i doubt I'll be getting a new hard drive soon :(
I still find it strange that this has been happening ever since it was forced to power on and off a few times in a row...

That had nothing to do with it, just bad timing

Your drive isnt in good shape. Even the smart status is reporting it as bad. Better make sure you have a good backup.

@HarveyZey: The drive was simply "DOA" (Dead On Arrival). Do you have (a) warranty for that drive ? Perhaps then you can get a refund.

@Shane: You recommend buying a Western Digital drive. But, according to my info, that brand of drives doesn't have a good reputation. Or have they improved thier products ?

All I use is western digital. But I also use their higher up models and not their cheap ones

The ones I use are either the black edition or the enterprise edition, both comes with a 5 year warranty. Their low ends, blues and greens only come with 2 year.
