Laptop Running Extremely Slow
« on: April 21, 2013, 03:44:19 AM »
Very sorry if this is in the wrong section, but i am now having problems with my laptop. First, i turn it on, and it usually stays on the starting windows screen for a few minutes. Then, when i log on, it takes anywhere between 5 minutes-1 hour to actually log on. Even after all that, there's a black screen lasting another few minutes, before the desktop finally loads.

Now as the desktop finally loads, everything is extremely slow. It's unbearable. Opening things takes a few minutes, and most start up processes haven't even finished loading. Sometimes, the mouse just doesn't work. Then when it does, it is very laggy. I can't even open my anti virus to run a full scan, as it doesn't even load. I can't acess my anti virus through safe mode, either. I am yet to test how long it takes to log off, as it's still logging off right now, and it's been over an hour. (Edit: it took around two hours)

I don't suspect that it is a virus, but a few days ago, my laptop was turned off then on again a few times in a row, by the power button, by accident. Safe mode appears to run perfectly fine. Intel Rapid Storage Technology tells me that my system is configured to enable SATA features, which might have something to do with it.

A few more things about it: hitting ctrl+alt+del does nothing, no matter how much time i wait, the start menu refuses to open, and makes explorer crash, and games also run extremely slow. Any help at all is appreciated, thanks.

Edit: I just realised there is a Windows 7 section :P my bad, sorry. I am running Windows 7

It could be a number of things. But one thing I have seen on a few of my customers computers was the antivirus going haywire and causing the problem. Good way to tell if it is a program doing it is to see if you have the same problem in safe mode

So since you said it runs fine in safe mode then it is most likley a program doing it. First thing is to uninstall the antivirus and see how it does :-)

Uh slight problem. Due to how awesome Trend Micro is, i can't uninstall it in safe mode either -.- any suggestions?

Also, now when i run it in normal mode, it starts up a bit faster, but now it completely freezes on the desktop. In the top right, a little box appears with energy saver and has never appeared before. Right now, i'm fearing a full factory reset is required D:

Perhaps their uninstaller will work?

Another thing you can try as well.

Go to safe mode, then go to start and run and put in msconfig

When it opens go to the services tab, put a check on hide Microsoft services. Then uncheck all non MS services. Then go to the startup tab. Uncheck everything for startup.

Then reboot and see how it goes. Then you might be able to uninstall the AV.

Thanks for thr help, Shane. Uninstalling Trend through diagnostics helped. The starting up, logging in and out, and the desktop loading still takes awhile, but unless there is a definite fix, it's bearable. Everything else seems fine, with no freezing or lagginess. Once again, thanks for the help!

Some applications like steam and skype are a bit slow, but it's fine unless there is a,definite fix, as said before.

OK good :-)

Now it is time to trim it even more.

First how many programs are running in the background? Open task manager and see how many processes there is. On my system I try to keep it under 60. I have been on customers machines who had over 100+ and they asked why it was slow lol.

You can also run my simple system tweaker
http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/simple_system_tweaker.html

And of course make sure to check the speed of the hard drive. The drive is the bottle neck in performance and if the drive is going bad it will start to get slower and slower.

Using msconfig, i managed to bring down the current processes down to 49 (it was at 81 before : P). It has helped a little bit, but it's still slow and likes to freeze a bit.

http://www.pcwintech.com/drive-speedometer

This way you can see if something is using the drive a bit :-)

Using the tweaking, Windows Update and Group Policy Client service are the ones that take a long time to close when shutting down. Starting up, logging on and loading the desktop are still slow. When logging on, User Profile Service and Preparing Your Desktop take up a majority of the time. The drive Speedometer constantly reads 0Bytes/s.

Memory usage is usually around 1gb out of 7.86gb total, when nothing is open.

Plenty of memory, what CPU do you have?

It is possible the slow down is the hard drive.
