Windows 7 hangs on shutting down!!Now doesn't boot!!
« on: February 26, 2013, 09:43:13 AM »
About a month ago my Windows 7 computer has started freezing on the shutting down/restarting screen, it also wants to check my disk and whenever I allow it, it also freezes after completing disk check and trying to shutdown, the only way I can shut down my computer is by holding down the Turn On button or unplugging my cable.
Now it doesn't boot, more info down below in comments.

You may have a bad sector on the drive.

Go into the Windows 7 recovery and open the command window and put in
chkdsk c: /f /r

That will do a sector check on the drive and will take a while to complete. Let me know the results

I have let the Check disk complete itself (it pops up every time I start my computer) and it says 0 bad sectors and then wants to restart and freezes. And when I try to do it manually it says Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N) It does chkdsk every time I run my computer, but now I started skipping it, because it freezes.

After chkdsk runs at startup it has to write to the registry to remove itself from startup. But it is locking up before it can do that so it is always coming up at startup.

I wonder if the registry in Windows is corrupted or there is a permissions problem.

There are 2 ways we can try to fix it.

The first is to use my Windows repair tool.
http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/windows_repair_all_in_one.html

Make sure to have it do a reg backup first and then  run all the repairs and reboot.

If that doesnt fix it then I will give you a guide on how to do a repair install of Windows 7 so you can keep all your programs and settings

It didn't work and ruined my connection (couldn't connect to Internet), so I did a registry backup.

Only repair int he program that touches the network connection is the "Repair Winsock & DNS Cache" try the repairs again but skip that one and let me know.

Never had that repair break an connect as it is just resetting tcp with built in Windows commands.

Tried doing that, but it was shutting down for like 30 minutes and still didn't do it. It didn't hang, but in 30 minutes it didn't finish shutting down.

Lets try this, download and run my tweak tool

http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/simple_system_tweaker.html

One of the tweaks in there is a reg tweak to tell windows to say what it is doing during startup and shutdown.

Lets see if that will at least tell us at what point Windows is having trouble.

The settings dont take effect till a reboot anyways, shutdown again now and see if it says anything.

And if you could take a picture of the screen with your phone when it gets stuck and post it. That way I can see what your seeing

This time it didn't hang, but it didn't shut down either. The screen was ok and the little ring next to the Shutting Down text was moving, but it didn't shut down, I waited for 5 minutes.

OK so the ring was moving, so it didnt freeze. Sounds like something it is trying to close down is refusing to.

Try this, go into safe mode, and once in safe mode do a shutdown. Does it work then?

I was on a vacation so I couldn't respond, but I highly doubt that any of those programs you suggested me work, they made my booting time longer, by starting to say like Loading Desktop and other stuff which they didn't do before.
But now my computer doesn't even boot, it is stuck at the Starting Windows screen(the Windows logo slightly moves but doesn't boot), System Repair gets stuck at a loading screen where it says Microsoft Corporation(the loading bar moves but doesn't boot again), it is also so with Safe Mode, it gets stuck at a screen after loading CLASSPNP.sys

So I somehow got it  to work again, but it still hangs on shutting down so I am thinking about System Restore, however after a CHKDSK( I went away while it was running, after I came back) I had a BSOD and it said DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE and the code was 0x0000009F.

That doesnt slow anything down, that is nothing more than telling windows to report what it is doing.

Sounds like you have hardware problems. First thing to check is the memory. Download this
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Memory-Tweak/Microsoft-Windows-Memory-Diagnostic.shtml

It will have you burn the tester to a cd. Then once done boot off that cd. The memory test will run for as long as you let it. Let it run for about 30 min to an hour and let me know how the test comes back
