Both the UDP and TCP of a port test successful...
« on: February 05, 2013, 05:14:13 PM »
But as soon as I open Transmission, the TCP fails the test. Is this correct and expected bahavior for when a BitTorrent client is running, or is something wrong? And if the latter, do you know what it is?

(I'm a total newbie to Torrenting, but I did manage to create a static IP address and add/create a port forwarder to my very old router, so I'm teachable! I hope this isn't an incredibly stupid question.)

If something else is using the port then the port tester can open and listen on it :-)

If the tester says the port is open then you can count that it is.

I have to say--first, WOW! Thanks! I didn't expect an answer so fast.  (And also, running your program was the easiest thing I've done all week, that's great design there!

So what happens is, I restarted the computer, and ran Simple Port Tester on the port I forwarded for torrents. TCP and UDP both tested as open (yay!). Then I opened Transmissionbt, and checked that it was using the same port and that it said that the  port was open. (Not so trusted, but it's something.) Then I ran Simple Port Tester on that same port, with Transmissionbt running--and the TCP came back with an error message, and then failed.  (UPD still came back as open, so I did SOMETHING right!)

So does that mean the port is open or not?

My port tester will fail on a TCP port if another program is using that port.

From the sounds of it both ports are open and port forwarding part is done.
