Are you sure?

Next time it goes out check the lights, if the lights are still on I want you to do 2 ping tests.

1. ping google.com
2. then ping 8.8.8.8

Let me know what happens with both when the connections drop next

Isn't 8.8.8.8 the Google Dns server? lol. But alright, I don't know when it will drop, but I'll try it out.

Yes it is the google dns server. My ping test is this,

By googling google.com it has to use DNS to convert the name to an IP. And so by having you ping an IP directly DNS isnt used.

So if google.com fails but the 8.8.8.8 works that tells me DNS is what is failing

Sorry about taking forever to reply. My internet has only gone down once since last, and it was during a tournament I was having in a game, so I had no time to run a ping test.

Well I got about 2 weeks of Mediocre internet and I've already picked up a new problem. I get very large random lag spikes while gaming. I can only I assume the modem is getting throttled somehow, or maybe a cable is messed up somewhere. Checking to see if a cable is messed up is useless however, because I've already had someone check twice. I should mention I have Comcast, so they probably didn't even check and told me it's alright for all I know.

Speedtest.net notes that I get 20 mb/s when browsing the web, but I've noticed that the lag spikes albeit more uncommon, also appear when I'm browsing the internet. I've also noticed that a new server has popped up right next to me on Speedtest.net that didn't used to be there until recently, I'm not sure what that means, I can only assume it's part of Speedtest themselves, so it shouldn't affect much.

Any help would, much again, be much appreciated. Thanks.

So random internet drops and other times lag spikes. You should see about getting the cable modem replaced to see if it helps.

I may remind you that this IS a new modem, since we started the thread. I don't know why we're renting a modem from Comcast though, it doesn't make sense to me, maybe I can convince my parents to actually go buy a nice modem.

How does this one sound: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16825122015 ?

I am a newegg fan myself, I buy all my stuff there lol

That modem seems to have a lot of good reviews. Would be a good one.

With the random lag spikes and the internet drops it does sure seem to be the modem. But I am only say that based on the fact that its happening to every device and not just your computer.

We haven't gotten a new modem yet, but I figured I would update you with a few more things I found out.  When I tested the connection on Pingtest.net, I found that I was actually getting some Packet loss.  Rather than getting a ton of random ping all the time, what's actually happening is that I'm losing connection for half a second and then reconnecting, which results in my ping shooting up.  Do either of those problems relate to anything besides a modem problem?

If you connect directly to the modem and skip the router and it still happens then it is either the modem or a crappy signal from the ISP to the modem.
