My Internet drops out randomly
« on: December 30, 2012, 02:56:39 PM »
Hello again, happy new year, almost :)

So I've got a new problem, my internet drops out every few hours or so. We just replaced the modem yesterday, and not only does it still drop, our connection went from 35 mb/s to 6 mb/s. So I might be a little annoyed. I have Comcast Cable, I'm not sure what our modem is, but we're renting it from Comcast, and it has a router inside of it, so we don't use a separate router anymore. I can't tell you what the modem is because I have no idea, I see nothing that identifies it.
It's also not the wires running from the wall socket, because we've changed those. It's not the router inside the modem either because the computer connected by Ethernet loses connection as well.

So I'm out of ideas, please help. ;_;

The fact that the computer that uses a network cable and not wireless tells me it isnt a wireless problem.

If the modem/router is the only one you use from them and they just replaced it then it sounds like there is a noise problem from them to you.

The internet that comes through the cable from them has a noise limit. If you give them a call and ask them to check the connection level and let them know it is dropping off.

Years ago when I had cable I had the same problem. They came out and turns out that some of the silicon they use got into the wires up at the pole and was causing a bad connection. Once they fixed it the internet was good to go.

So recap, you know it isnt any of the computers, they all drop at the same time. You know it isnt the router or modem because it has been replaced, the old one did the same. So the only common factor left is the connection from comcast to you.

Also a bad signal from them means you wouldn't get full speed from them either

A few questions though, if it was a problem with the wires, wouldn't a few other people on the street with comcast get problems too? And why do I get a slow connection with this new modem and not the one I had two days ago?

The cables that come from the pole to your house, and the cables in the walls. Not to mention the cable splitters that are used. I have seen splitters go bad. All these would affect you and no one else on the road.

Call them tell them that your old modem and new modem both drop the connection and ask them to check the signal strength. Also inform them about your internet speed difference.

So I consulted with my parents. It turns out the last tech guy we had here checked the cables and found nothing wrong.

It is possible you got another crappy modem. Again look at the common factors. You can rule out that it is any of the systems.

If you had a 2nd router that was hooked up then it could be it, but you said that it is only the modem they sent that is hooked up.

In cable modems there is a noise DB level. That might be worth checking.

See if this works

Quote
Type or copy and paste "http://192.168.100.1" into the address bar. A diagnostics page appears.

Scroll down to find your cable modem's downstream SNR, downstream power, upstream SNR and upstream power.

Write down each of the signal strength values. The SNR optimally measures around 30 to 40 dB. Anything below 30 will typically cause service interruptions.

Try to log into the router if you can and post a screen shot for me. The router IP will be the gateway IP on your system.

Those levels look ok to me.

When the internet drops does everything in the house that use internet drop as well?

When it does drop how long does it last?

Yes, everything drops. It stays down for random amount of times, anywhere from half an hour to a few hours.

Then it has to be something on their end. The only common factor to all the devices is the modem itself and the connection from comcast to the modem.

Next time it happens check the lights on the modem. Right now you should see which ones are on. When it goes out see if the ones that are on now are out or blinking.
