CleanMem and Virtual Memory
« on: November 16, 2012, 12:44:57 PM »
As I understand it, there are two kinds of memory limits in windows; physical memory and virtual memory. Physical memory is RAM plus page files on your hard drive. Virtual memory is the the set of memory addresses that the computer uses to run an application and the virtual memory is mapped to some physical memory either RAM or disk. If you are running Windows 32 bit, it is limited to a virtual address space of 2Gb per process. I run an application that has memory leaks which cause excessive use of the virtual address space. It was for this reason that I started using CleanMem. CleanMem does not seem to help this problem. So, my question is, when CleanMem does what it does, is it just freeing up physical memory, virtual memory, or both?

Thanks,

Tom

It only does the physical memory.

It uses a Windows API to trigger Windows to do the work. I looked long and hard and MS doesn't give any API's to clean the page file or virtual.
