I have no clue on that one. I dont use those routers and when they have custom firmware from the ISP you might run into problems if you try changing the firmware. It is alwasy best to see if the ISP has a firmware update.

Thanks for the reply and sorry to disturb your beauty sleep.    The problem is that the firmware supplied by STC does not give me any advanced options like parental control etc. Cheers.

If your unable to find a firmware to work you could also have the router put into bridge mode, then hook up another router to it and setup what you need there. Bridge mode makes the router act as a modem only and not a router, passing the internet Ip onto what ever device is plugged into it. You then setup say like a netgear router and do what you need there

I see. A quickie... is it possible to restore the old firmware if I decide to try the Talk Talk firmware. I checked the Huawwei website and the photos of the two modems are not identical, however, the menus are the same. So will my modem be rendered useless if the firmware fails? Oh That's two quickies.  :cheesy:

Thats impossible to tell without trying it (It comes down to what chips are on the mother board inside). If the firmware fails in any way it will brick it. Normally you cant recover. If the firmware loads and you can log into the router you might be able to go back.

Instead, what I do, is I get a router that supports the 3rd party firmware DD-WRT. Then I have all the options I need.

But no matter what, when it comes to firmware there is always a chance of something going wrong and turning the modem into a paper weight.

Thanks Shane. I really don't need an extra paper weight but I will try it as soon as I get another modem. I will let you know of the outcome in case someone else has a similar problem. It's 12:00 midnight in this part of the world so it's my turn to turn in.
