Can't see other network computers unless firewall is off
« on: September 25, 2012, 08:44:31 AM »
Hi,

Here's my situation. My desktop and laptop are both connected to the same network.
My desktop is connected to the router via ethernet cable and my laptop is connected via wifi. Both have internet.
If both computers are connected to the same network, shouldn't I be able to see them in the "Networks" list
under Computer in the My Computer window?

So I did a little test. I turned off my firewall and amazingly I can see my other network computers.

I don't want to keep my firewall off though. I mean, isn't there another way?

Isn't the whole point of being connected to the same network, (and being in a homegroup),
to connect to other network computers without turning off your firewall?
Or am I doing something wrong? Please help.

Thanks,

Navi.

You must have some of the services Windows needs being blocked.

I have also noticed that those services are set for when you choose home network but are blocked when you choose public network.

Go to the firewall list and see what file and printer sharing and a few other MS ones are set to.
