If it is an older system give it at least 5 min to try and boot. But if it fails I need to know what that error says exactly.

But if it is failing I wonder if a different OS would do like

You already have Ubuntu though, I just need to know the error and I can tell you what to do to get it fixed :-)

The error kernel panic - not syncing vfs

I found this to get around it

Quote
holding shift as it booted. I was greeted with a menu titled, "GNU GRUB" on which there were 8 boot options (3 kernel versions each with a regular and a recovery mode and two Memory test options). I choose the sixth option, titled "Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6..32-14-generic (recovery mode)"

Should be able to pull up a recovery mode.

Odd, never had that problem with Ubuntu.

Looks like we need to try something else.

By any chance do you have a Windows xp disk handy?
BartPE is one option
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BartPE

Basically all we need is anything that can boot off a cd or USB and give you access to copy the files off the drive.
This might work as well
