2 Routers and 1 Synology DS210J
« on: May 23, 2012, 02:26:34 AM »
This may be a strange setup. Not really sure if it is possible but here goes:

I have one router/modem from my ISP which is connected to my own Netgear router. All my hardware; Laptops, Smartphone, Popcorn Hour and Synology NAS connects via my own Netgear Router. Everything works perfectly except I would like to move the Synology NAS because of the slight noise output of the Hard drives spinning. If it is possible I would like to move into the room in which the router/modem from my ISP is located. But then I guess that I need to forward a whole lot of ports in order for FTP, Web access, Windows file sharing, SABnzbd and NFS to work or is this not possible?

I found an article about DMZ but I think it handled another situation with forwarding all ports through the router/modem to the 2nd router. I my case I guess I need to forward ports from 2nd to 1st router?

Hope that somebody can help me

If you move it to the modem then you will disable DMZ in the modem.

Then setup the port forwarding rules you need for it in the modem.

Then any other ports you need forward for the devices behind the netgear will need to be forward in the modem and have it point to the WAN IP of the netgear. Then you setup the port forwarding in the netgear like normal.

Will be more work, but doable  :-)
