PS3 DNS Error
« on: April 30, 2012, 11:46:52 AM »
Hi!

I'm having a problem: I can't connect to PSN or internet in general with my PS3.

Odd thing though, as I could perfectly play last week and all.

Here's the deal: When I try to connect, I get a DNS error. I always connected through the "Easy" mode, which is the automatic one, no need for configuration and all. I'm using an Ethernet connection.

I decided to go Easy again, this time I timed out trying to obtain an IP address. Huh. So I went manual. I gave my PS3 an static IP, and set the DNS servers my PC is using. When testing connection, I did obtain the IP adress, but then the DNS error showed up.

So if I try to go automatic, I don't obtain IP, but if I go manual I do get the IP and fail with the DNS.

I'm using the lamest router ever, ZTE ZXV100 W300, but it worked just fine until a couple of days ago.

Also, I can connect through Wi-Fi just fine, but Ethernet is a million times superior so, I'd like to know if I could do anything to overcome this problem.

Thanks in advance!

Unplug the power to the router, wait 30 sec plug it back in, then do the same thing to the PS3.

Once backup have it set to auto and see how it goes

Tried it before, tried it again. It keeps saying that it timed out attempting to obtain an IP address.

Perhaps its something else?

You said wireless was fine.

So what is different...the network cable :-)

Try a different cable if you have one and let me know.

Perhaps I should give you a note about my set up with cables and all:

There's the router a few rooms away. There's an ethernet cable going all the way to my room. This cable goes to a switch.

From the switch, two cables start: one goes to my PC and the other one goes to my PS3.

You see, there's many cables I have to change.

I'm guessing it's the one from the switch to the PS3?

If the one to your computer is working fine then the one from the switch to the router should be fine. So just the cable from the ps3 should be switched out

Yaaaay!

After some cable maze in my room, I managed to get the PS3 cable on my PC, guess what, PC didn't connect to internet.

Luckily I had an extra brand new cable to make up for that broken cable.

I didn't know just a cable could cause DNS errors and all! I imagined it would just not connect.

Thanks for the help, I learnt a bit more today, even though you make me feel dumb!

It's the second time you help me out, last time was on Xbox heh, hope I don't have a problem with the Wii U or anything!

Thanks again, will recommend this site to anyone who has network problems.
