Control Panel

I'm re-installing vista on my brothers lap top, (doing a ton of updates). Updates are still going but I can't open control panel or just about anything in it that would be in the control panel from the search bar. Should let all of the updates complete and run sfc?

Yeah have to do SP1 first then 2. Google

vista service pack 1 network install

and the same for 2 and get the 32 or 64 bit version.

System Update Readiness Tool first. then the files names are

For SP1 (I have these on my drive for customer installs)
Windows6.0-KB936330-X86-wave0 (434 MB)
Windows6.0-KB936330-X64-wave0 (726 MB)

SP2
Windows6.0-KB948465-X86 (348 MB)
Windows6.0-KB948465-X64 (577 MB)

For some reason, this laptop will not boot from installation cd. It gets to the vista wallpaper and nothing. Any idea?

If this is a fresh install and your having this much trouble it may be a good idea to do a memory and hard drive test

I'm currently running check disk. So far a bunch of bad sectors. This was my brothers old lap top. He never did any maintenance. It's mine now so I'm trying to get it working good. Hopefully all goes well.

Bad sectors means time for a new drive :-)

Agreed. The problem will only get worse. Replace the drive before you can't use it.
