Daily log skipped a few hours
« on: September 27, 2011, 08:30:13 AM »
Had a bug early this morning.
SIML logged the traffic (presumably) correctly on an hour by hour basis but skipped the first 7 hours on a daily basis.

Network Hourly Traffic Report
09/27/2011 8:00:00   46.94 MB   14.32 MB   61.26 MB
09/27/2011 7:00:00   53.67 MB   87.65 MB   141.31 MB
09/27/2011 6:00:00   2.41 KB   0 Bytes   2.41 KB
09/27/2011 5:00:00   0 Bytes   0 Bytes   0 Bytes
09/27/2011 4:00:00   41.20 MB   462.84 MB   504.04 MB
09/27/2011 3:00:00   109.82 MB   980.65 MB   1.06 GB
09/27/2011 2:00:00   85.66 MB   937.30 MB   1,022.96 MB
09/27/2011 1:00:00   95.30 MB   859.32 MB   954.62 MB
09/27/2011 0:00:00   133.07 MB   659.40 MB   792.47 MB
09/26/2011 23:00:00   133.22 MB   452.82 M

I wasn't awake but these numbers look plausible based on what the computer was doing then.

But when I looked at the computer around 7:30 I noticed the Network Traffic display was at zero bytes sent and received.  It started logging traffic the first time I accessed the 'net.

09/27/2011   102.39 MB   103.85 MB   206.25 MB

Those numbers reflect the activity since 7:30 or so.

Not much unusual was going on at midnight - some bittorrent action.  Never seen this happen before and I've been using SIML for a few months.

The program uses WinPcap to look at the packets and monitor them. If for some reason winpcap messed up I could see why there would be 0's.

But if the system wasn't doing any network traffic and was idle for a long time I am curious.

Yet the log you posted shows data for every hour except for 5:00

yeah, the HOURLY log did.  The daily log didn't record anything until I did something that accessed the internet around 7:30.  So the daily log is underreporting my traffic for the day as it missed everything from midnight to 7:30.

So the part of the program that sees traffic did so.  It logged it to the hourly section and nothing else.

Perhaps there is a bug in the program. Need to test and find out :-)

But this is the first time this has happened?

First time that I know of.  The program has run pretty well since I installed it.  The only repeatable bug is that, very infrequently, when I take the computer out of sleep mode it (siml) doesn't work.  Then I just abort through Task Manager and start it up again.

Do you think it might be sleep mode causing the problem?

No because it wasn't in sleep mode at any time that day.

Here's what happened.  I left the computer around 23:00, went to sleep.  Computer kept doing it's thing - dl'ing a big file via bittorrent.  Around 3:00 HPs monthly hardware diagnostic kicked in.  It takes a long time to run when something else is going on.  Hours.  Around 4:00 I woke up and looked at the computer.  I noticed the HP thing was running and shut off the bittorrent so the HP would finish faster.  Went back to sleep.

got up around 7:30, looked at computer.  Noticed SIML was showing 0 bytes uploaded and downloaded.  Accessed 'net - SIML recorded the activity.  Poked around the log noticed that the hourly figures were normal but the daily figures were at zero (plus the few btyes that had been transferred in the last couple of minutes).

The HP thing runs every month - hasn't hurt the SIML before (that I've noticed).

So hourly worked while daily totals didn't. If the winpcap or monitor wasn't working then hourly wouldn't have worked either.

Only thing I can think of is it is a bug in the program. But the trick to fixing any bug is being able to replicate it. And that means I need to find out what triggered it.

Let me know if it happens again and any information on it. If I can replicate it i can fix it
