Simple Port Tester - Unix/Linux Edition
« on: September 23, 2011, 12:12:44 PM »
It is nice that you offer http://www.pcwintech.com/simple-port-tester and http://www.pcwintech.com/simple-port-tester-mac-edition

#1 But how about an Unix/Linux version?

#2 If not, can I run the Windows Version with the help of Wine?

#3 If I can run the Windows version with the help of Wine, how?

For example I point to http://www.grc.com/freeware/wine.htm

Please and thanks.

I taught myself Xcode and made the Mac version a while ago. I program in VB6.

I would love to find out what is needed to get any of my programs to work in wine and then put a how to up on the site :-)

But as of right now I haven't tried.

The simple port tester will need the winsock control. It does use custom controls for unicode. I could make a more basic version if that will help run it in wine for you

Ok.

After downloading Wine on my ubuntu 10.04 LST computer and following the advise on grc.com for running Wine Apps, I got a dialog (or dailog - sp?) that says..

Quote
Setup has detected that your Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 run-time files are out of date. Click OK to install this technology now or Cancel to abort setup

So, I guess I have to press ok.

I will tell you how it goes. Cross(es) fingers.

Installs fine, but then an error comes back.

#1 Does that app require admin/root powers?

For example I point to

http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=17231&iTestingId=42629

and

http://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?t=2996&sid=b301c13c2f3a86fa961a9440687a3632

#2 Do you have any ideas on how to trouble shoot this?

Thanks.

The program will use IE to load the port tester page, so you may need that as well. AT which point the program will open the port with winsock and listen for a connection.

Reading the forum link you gave me it looks like in order to open the port the program will need t be ran as root.

Shane

Interesting.

I was just wondering, why does it need root/admin power?

For example the port checker that I got from details at http://portforward.com/help/portcheck.htm does not need root/admin power (or even su/sudo)..

If you have to, please make a more basic version.

Thanks.

It shouldn't need it, I am just going off what the forum said lol.
My app it self is just opening a port and listening for a connection. It does need the IE control though.

Please see my other thread at http://forums.pcwintech.com/index.php/topic,2377.0.html

Thanks.

PS. While I could of posted what I noticed here, but what I posted in that other post would be off topic for this subject.

I replied to that post. I don't support their software bud :-)

I am a Windows guy and don't know much about Linux right now. I can always grab a copy of Ubuntu and try to get it to work. But you don't even really need to do that.

Just get a program that will listen on the port you want and accept incoming connections. Then use my port tester page
http://www.pcwintech.com/port_test.php

As long as something accepts the connection coming from my site it will give you a good result.

Ok.

At your site, you say..

Download Simple Port Tester or Simple Port Forwarding to test both TCP & UDP ports and for a more accurate test.

Please explain how it is (or they are) more accurate than the web based TCP port checker.

Thanks.

Because my program opens and listens on the port for an incoming connection. If nothing is using the port it will fail no matter what.

Something has to accept the incoming connection otherwise every web based port checker will fail because nothing accepted the connection attempt.
