Belkin G intermittent problem
« on: May 23, 2011, 10:57:12 AM »
Hi,

I have a Scientific Atlanta Webstar EPC2100R2 modem connected to a Belkin G wireless router Model F5D7234-4 v3. I have a desktop connected using an ethernet cable and 2 netbooks connected wirelessly.

About 50% of the time I have no problem connecting to the internet but the rest of the time, despite being connected to my home network, there is no internet connection. If I plug the desktop straight into the modem it connects to the internet fine.

Firmware is up to date.

Can someone help, it's really annoying!

Is it your desktop (wired connection) or your netbooks (wireless connection) or all of them that are having the intermitent connection problems?

I am assuming that it is both and this is an issue with your router but I wanted to make sure. If connecting directly to your modem always fixes the problem then there a couple of things that could be going on.
  • Your router is set to drop the internet connection after a certain amount of Idle Time and isn't reconnecting properly. You can adjust the WAN settings to tell it not to use the idle time (unless you are charged for every minute you use the internet).
  • You could have a faulty cable. Make sure all the cables you are using are working correctly.
  • Make sure the router isn't over heating as this could cause the router to drop the connection.
  • If you never reboot the router (un-plug it) then it might just need a reboot.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply.

My replies to your points; Yes all of them are experiencing the connection problem (wired and wireless).

1. The problem isn't that the connection drops, it's that I can't connect initially. Once I get a connection (after repeatedly resetting the router) it's usually fine.

2. I've replaced the ethernet cable and the Virgin Cable cable.

3. Because the router won't connect initially I'm not sure it's an overheating issue (the router will have been powered up for less than 10mins).

4. Rebooting the router several times in a row does eventually fix the problem but that's more of a symptom of the problem than a solution.

I've tried disabling the router firewall in case it was conflicting with the software firewall but that's not solved it either.

It sounds like the router might just be going bad. Is this a newly purchased router that can be returned/exchanged or is it one you've been using for a while? If it's one you've been using for a while did the router work correctly for some period of time and only recently has started having problems?

Where there any recent changes made that directly preceded the issues showing up? Such as a firmware update?

It's about 1 year old and has always done this. Being a very lazy person, its only recently annoyed me enough to try and fix it, that and the fact it's an intermittent problem.

Are you using a DSL or cable connection?

There really isn't anything to mess up with a Cable connection. If it's always done this with this router then I'd try a different router using the same basic settings and if that fixes it then you just have a faulty unit. Hopefully it's still under warranty.

If you can reproduce the problem easily, then log into your router when you don't have an internet connection and look on the status page. Tell me if you are getting any information for your WAN address and also check and see if there is an log file on the router and if there is then can you upload the error report for me so I can take a look at that?

Ok I'll give that a go. I'll post the info the next time occurs.

Incidentally thanks for your help, I've been having a look around this site and it's great, loads of useful information on it.

Cheers,

I have something else I want to check and for you to try. First, make sure you have the Internet WAN connection set to Dynamic if you don't already. Next, look at the MAC address setting under the WAN settings and there should be an option to clone the MAC address of your computer. Before you clone the address copy down the address that is already there in case you need to change it back. After you have that copied then clone the address and make sure it is the MAC address of the computer you say you can connect to the modem without any problem. See if that gets you fixed up.

Yep it was already on dynamic. The MAC address was already cloned although I don't remember doing that.

This may be improtant though.

The Desktop PC is currently connected (wired) to 'Network 2, home network' but the netbook (wireless) is connected to 'OurHouseNetwork, home network'. They can both connect to the internet. Could this mean I've somehow set up multiple networks and is this the problem.

I have Win7 64bit, is there somewhere I can see the list of networks me or my girlfriend have set up, would deleting all but one solve the problem?

Be sure to verify what MAC address that actually is. You can find the MAC address of your computer by opening a command prompt and typing "ipconfig /all" and looke for the network card and you should be able to find the MAC address of your router on the bottom of the unit. If the address in the router's WAN page isn't one of those then that could be your issue.

The different networks are something local to your computer having to do with security permissions. It is designed mostly for laptops. See this article (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Choosing-a-network-location). So no, that shouldn't have anything to do with it.

The MAC address in the WAN settings is the same as the one listed in the command prompt 'Physical Address', not the one on the base of the Router.

Can you try changing it to the one on the bottom of the router, unless your ISP instructed you to clone it. After you change it then reboot the router and if you have any trouble then go back in the settings and change it back.
