We need to be able to test each piece of hardware 1 at a time ideally otherwise we can't know specifically where the problem is. Wireless is almost always more like to be a problem than wired so that is also why Shane and I want to remove the AP for testing purposes.

When you are able to connect directly to the switch and/or modem be sure to use a cable that you can verify is working correctly and on an ethernet port that is working correctly. I say this because I recently helped someone who's problem turned out to be a failed port on the router.

Also, do you know what model your switch is?

Yes the ethernet cable connection was fine: the Xbox was the problem. Even if I move the Xbox and put it near the modem, it says it can't obtain IP adress.

My switch mark is Advantek Networks :P

Thanks,
Neville

Odd it won't get an IP address.

I am not sure if it has a network reset, but disable the wireless in it and have it reset its network settings. See if it can get an IP through the network cable.

If need be try using the cable that is going to your system. It is possible the cable you are using, that you said was the one going to the AP is bad. Which would explain the entire problem

The DNS not work and the XP not getting an IP.

Like I said, make sure you are using cable and ports that you know for a fact work. It is also entirely possible that the wireless component of the Xbox 360 has failed. There is also a chance that the ethernet port has failed on the Xbox. The only way you can know this for sure is to test the port by using a known good cable and port.

If it turns out that both the wired and wireless has in fact failed then you have 3 options. Purchase a USB wireless adapter made for the Xbox and see if that works; send it in for repair; buy a new Xbox.

:P I'm sure the Ethernet cable works, I'm using it right now with my PC.

I'll try reseting the network, thanks for the advice,
Neville

Okay. Good. I just wanted to make sure the cable works.

So, just to be clear, you tried taking the known good cable and connected your Xbox directly to the modem/router completely negating the switch and AP or you connected the Xbox directly to the switch negating only the AP?

I tried both Evan, directly from the modem; and from-the-modem-to-the-switch-to-my-xbox.

Both failed.

Well if everything is set to automatic in the modem/router and the Xbox then it sounds like you might just have a busted box. Have you been able to reset the network settings to a default state for the Xbox yet?

The next best thing you could do to verify that your box is failing is to take it to a friends house who also uses Xbox live and try it on their network and then also try their known good box on your network. If your box doesn't work at their house and their box does work at your house then you know for a fact it is your box. At that point you need to have it replaced or repaired.

Let me know what you decide to do.

Ok, something wierd...

I tried to test it again, the Ethernet cable I mean. I was surprised: I logged into Xbox Live. I was like "WTF"? Then, I tried the same with my Wi-Fi. It worked.

Sounds like it was the xbox that has the problem, and some how it seems to have corrected itself. Next time it happens though I think it is safe to say it is the xbox

Sounds like either the Xbox or possibly Xbox Live in your area?  Most likely the Xbox though since the network test does it in steps and the service is actually the last part. Since you didn't even get that far though I don't think it was that.

Just keep an eye on it and hopefully it doesn't happen again. It could be a sign of a failing component but hopefully not.
