Xbox Live (Can't resolve DNS Servers)
« on: March 12, 2011, 05:51:04 PM »
Hello again Shane, how are you?  :cheesy:

I've got another problem here:

When I try to connect to Xbox Live, it says that my DNS servers can't resolve the names of the XBL servers or Xbox.com

I've tried every single "solution" of Microsoft's/Xbox's site without results.

Everything is set to automatic in my Xbox right now, but I tried all the ways I could: putting a static IP, Subnet Mask, Gateway, DNS servers, everything.

Here's how my wireless goes:

I've got a ZTE - ZXV10 W300 (ZTE v2.1 Firmware) Modem. The modem has a LAN cable that leads to a switch... This switch has 4 plugs connected:

- It has the modem cable
- Another LAN cable that connects to my PC
- The "power" cable that turns on my TP-Link TL-WA500G Access Point
- The wireless cable that plugs into the the AP.

That's all what I can tell you you ATM, if you need any more info just tell me :)

Thanks,
Neville  :artist:

Any other machines having trouble?

You could always tell the xbox to use these dns
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

Those are Google DNS servers. I use them

You can also unplug the power to everything. (The xbox, the switch and the router & modem)

Leave it all unplugged for about 30 sec. then plug everything back in. Starting with the modem first.

Basically a network reboot

Thanks for the uber fast reply :)

I changed my Xbox DNS settings to the google ones, then I "restarted" the network just like you told me.

But, oh là là, same error here.

Any ideas?  :cheesy:

Thanks,
Neville

If you are not having trouble on your PC and only on the xbox, then I wonder if the xbox service is just down?

ok on your computer open a cmd window and put in
ping Xbox.com

It will say request timed out, I just want to see if it gives the IP for Xbox.com.

How is your Xbox 360 connected? Is it connected via a wired or a wireless connection?

Shane:
It shows the IP (65.55.42.140)

Evan:

It's a wireless connection (My Xbox is connected to my AP, the TP-Link one).

Also, have you tried connecting the Xbox 360 to only the modem to see if it is the router or your connection in general?

Were there any hardware changes made with your system around the time that it stopped working?

Does a wired connection work?

OK same IP I get. So this means DNS is working on your system.

For testing would you mine turning off the wireless on the xbox and connecting it with a network cable and see how it does?

I can't connect to the modem wirelessly, its too far away (that's why I use a switch + AP).

AFAIK there hasnt been any changes.

And no, I just tried with a network cable (The one that goes from the modem to the switch, and from the switch to my PC) and it said "Can't obtain an IP Adress from your router or modem".

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Neville

Were there any hardware changes made in your setup when this problem happened? For instance, did you try adding the AP at the time this and that is when you ran into trouble?

Also, you say that your modem/router is connected to a switch and then you have the AP connected to that switch. Well is this switch really a switch or is a router?

Make sure that you told the xbox not to use wireless.

I am wondering if we have a problem with the AP.

The XBL connection worked fine until a week ago: No changes were made AFAIK.

I have a switch AND  router:

My modem has a LAN cable plugged in. This cable goes to the switch.

The switch has 4 cables plugged at the moment:

The LAN cable from the modem
The LAN cable that goes from the switch to my PC
The "power" cable for the AP
The "wireless" cable for the AP.

And I bough the AP 2 months ago.

Thanks,
Neville

I understand, just for testing purposes though I want the AP out of the way.

Reason why is your computer isn't using the AP and DNS works fine. Your Xbox uses the AP and DNS isn't working. So to test I want to remove the AP.

If the DNS starts working then we know the AP is the problem (Or if for some odd reason your xbox is connecting to someone else's network)

If the DNS still doesn't work then we know the AP is good and we can start looking elsewhere
