Hello,

im new to the forum, but not to forwarding ports for xbox live. but shane if you or anyone else can help me i would like to know how to resolve this issue. my cousin i am trying to help him forward his ports over the phone.but he is telling me his dns server and default gateway are saying 172.16.0.1 and he is also saying his ip address is starting with 10. something, now what i need to know is how can he get his router and ip address to recognize his adresses as 192. does he have to make a static ip address?? or simply reset the router??

he has a Netgear Wireless-G Router WGR614v9

now my simple question is, how can i get his adresses, ip etc. to 192.168

                                                                                                                         Thanks, Shawn

All of those address ranges are ranges that are alright to use in the home (Private IPs) so that alone shouldn't cause any problems nor should you need to change it.  Are you have a NAT issue that you are trying to resolve?

The 10's and 172's work the same way as the 192's.  If it's a home setup then you'll only be dealing with the number furthest to the right.  What is usually the problem with NAT issues with Xbox Live is either Internet provider or that you are behind two routers.

You will need to have the WAN (Internet) IP address on the router's status page checked.  Log into the router and find a page (usually the status page) that shows your WAN's IP address.  This address should match your internet address. You can check your Internet IP at http://www.pcwintech.com/port_test.php

If that address is something else then that is probably the problem.  A lot of times we find that people's modem is actually a router/switch as well so they are actually behind 2 routers!  Let me know what you find.

You'll want to be looking at the Internet part.  If you see your computers IP address then that is the LAN ethernet port.  You want to see the Internet address which is your WAN port.

Here's a screen shot of that router's (version 5) status page.  http://www.pcwintech.com/screenshots-netgear-wgr614-v5-netgear-firmware

You're looking to make sure the blurred out Internet Port address matches the one of the port status page I linked to earlier.

Yeah...it sounds like you are behind two routers.  Most likely your modem has a router built in.  Take a look at this guide about port forwarding when behind two routers to get you set up.  http://www.pcwintech.com/how-setup-two-or-more-routers-together-port-forwarding-port-triggering

After you have that done then you can do everything as normal and even use our Simple Port Forwarding tool to get everything working.

If you still really really want to just the computer set up with a 192.168.1.x address then you just have to change that under the LAN IP area of the router (http://www.pcwintech.com/files/screenshots/Netgear-WGR614_v5/011.png) and use a SubNet of 255.255.255.0

Personally just make sure UPnP is enabled in the netgear and your done. UPnP is auto port forwarding for things that support it, and the xbox does :-)

Go with UPnP first and see if it's working alright.  It probably will.  If it doesn't and you're still having trouble with Shane's guide then just post back in the next 30 days (threads automatically lock after 30 days of inactivity).

Be sure to let us know if you do get it working and what you had to do to get there.
