If I take a system checkpoint. Install some software. Use that software. Remove that software. Then do a system restore to a time prior to the installation of that software. Will the registry and file changes made by that software be gone?

Hard to tell, depends what keys. I personally never use system restore and never will.

What I do is use Virtual PC and install windows xp and do any test installs in there. And keep things off my system.
But I think I tried to have you do that once before but you don't have a xp cd to use.
