Well Good Morning, you're up bright and early. Hope you had a great day with the family. Ok - the very first one 'documents and settings' was 'read only' -- I unchecked it and told it to apply -- wanted to know if I wanted all folders underneath and I said yes -- got started and it said I was denied access to something and I told it to ignore all and to forge ahead. I assume it is still going because I just went back to look at it and it won't let me do anything. When it gets done I'll go back to the laptop and see what happens and make another post. This looks like it's going to take a long time.

3:40 am for me :-)
I am the kind of person that once I am woke up I cant fall back asleep. And my 3 dogs (Yes that's right, wife, 4 kids, 3 dogs, 2 cats, and what ever lives under the house ) decided they needed to go out. So now I am awake trying to tire myself out by getting some work done before I have to be at a customers at 10:30 am LOL

I know how that feels - yesterday 1:15 today 2:30 -- just can't go back to sleep, so up and at'em. Anyhow, I made those changes and then - "before I go back to the laptop let's take another look". Well shoot, the folder 'documents and settings still shows 'read only'. So I unchecked it again and this time when it asked I said 'this folder only' and applied. Then went to the next folder down and did the same thing with lower folder. Then went back to the top (documents and settings) and guess what it has the 'read only thingy' checked AGAIN (or still, maybe it never really went away). So I went to the laptop and did the same thing -- power down and back up. Went to a spreadsheet (made sure it wasn't one I already had up on the desktop) and opened it. Once again -- read only. This is getting frustrating.

Well we haven't fixed the first problem yet and now I'm gonna make it a little worse. I'm getting another desktop, don't have it set up yet, hoping to get it powered up today. Soooo, after it's up should I run the 'network wizard' to get it tied in to the home network or get you to tell me how to do it manually? Would like to go back and try to fix the original problem since it involved permissions on the Dell desktop, seems like I'll have the exact same problem trying to access files on the Dell from the new AMD desktop. TeamViewer time?

Well I guess I won't send you a screen shot -- worked fine this morning. Difference - when I came in it was marked as 'new' which is wrong since I looked at it the other day. Difference - across the bottom there are six differnt things you can select with 'reply' being one of them - when it failed what I had was just one item 'print'.

So maybe with those clues you can figure out what went wrong - not the first time this has happened to me.

Just as I thought turned out to be file permissions.
Since XP Home edition doesn't give a quick easy way to change the permissions this little command took care of it.

cacls "C:\Documents and Settings\Mac\My Documents" /T /G everyone:f

Opened a cmd window and ran that, changed the permissions on everything to everyone and full access.

Try it out for a bit and let me know everything is good and I will lock this thread.
