Novabackup does not recognise optical drives
« on: May 05, 2010, 02:31:52 AM »
Hi , I'm not sure if this is the rigth forum. Anyway, my problem is , recently I purchased Novabackup Professional ver. 11.1 , for backup purposes. I have 3 optical drive, including a blueray. None of the drives coming in Novabackup as a destination.
Emailing with Novabackup support, they make me to uninstall 4-5 apps, but still same result. Than tehy give up on me. The last email was stating that, "in that case this software will not work for you". Lovely. Not even mention refund or something. Does anyone have any idea, how to make it work?

Best Regards,

Alex ( Dabco)

Never used that program my self, but as a programmer I know that a program uses certain drivers to access the drives.
Just as an example, I did a quick Google search, this is a different backup software, but it shows you how it all depends on what is used to read the drives.
http://www.backup4all.com/kb/backup4all-does-not-recognize-my-cd-dvd-burner-how-can-i-backup-to-cd-dvd-84.html

You will see ASPI is what is used and is built into windows. So we need to find out which your backup software uses. Does it uses its own or ASPI? and once we know which then we can go about getting it fixed so it can read the drives :-) Simply uninstalling and reinstalling apps wont fix this. if the ASPI is corrupt then it needs to be fixed manually

OK, sounds like ASPI is broken and installing over it wont fix it. What version of Windows are you on ?
Then I will hunt down the info we need to get ASPI repaired :-)

ok a quick search got me this
http://home.werner.no/lars/aspi/default.asp
and
http://www.nch.com.au/burn/kb/1232.html

Also just to be 100% sure it is ASPI lets try some other apps that need it. Any cd burner app should do. Lets try this one

OK good! Now we have confirmed that ASPI works. SO now we can mark that off the list of things to check.

So now the question is what is your backup software doing differently that it isn't seeing the drives?

So if you talk to tech support again you can let them know it is not an ASPI problem lol.

What settings does Novabackup give for detecting and working with burners?
Also do you have any other cd burners installed? I know you should have one since you burned a test cd.

By goal is to try and find something conflicting. Some apps install their own ASPI type drivers, I have seen that before.

Here is en example where to check in the reg for extra filters that might be in the way.

Hi Shane,
According to Novabackup support, the program using ASPI driver.
Thats why I have had to uninstall about half a dozen programs.
I have 2 burner installed and 1 dvd rom.
1. Pioneer BD-RW BDR-205
2. Pioneer DVD-RW DVR111d
3. Liteon DVD Rom LTD163
All of them installed and working correctly, according to the device manager.

Cheers

Just about 1 am for me, I am finishing up my 2nd iPhone/iPad app and getting it online before I hit the bed.

Just as in that link I gave you go here in the reg.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

What do you have for Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values?

Well seems to me to be just a crappy program LOL.

So far you have covered all the bases. They must be something deeper that is keeping from reading the drives.
Im not sure how deep into this we should go, could take a while.
