cannot monitor USB device
« on: April 27, 2010, 09:21:43 AM »
Program monitors my Local Area connection OK but I also have a USB modem (verizon) which the program won't monitor as it says it cant find the device through WinPcap which I updated. The device is a WWAN what ever that means. When I go to the Network Information page it doesn't show a 'device address'.  What gives?

I haven't had a chance to test it on USB connections. But it shouldn't matter. It reads it through Windows like anything else. So I am curious to what is going on.

As you know my program uses WinPcap to read the info. To find out if it is just a limitation of my program or of WinPcap I would like you to download wireshark.

Wireshark is free and a dang good packet sniffer program. It uses Winpcap. If it can't read the device then we know it is Winpcap that has the trouble. If it can read it then we know its my program that is having the trouble :-)

I tried Wireshark and it did not list the USB adapter, only the Intel 2 Gigahertz adapter.

I enabled the IPv6, File sharing, and Client for MS on the Verizon network config. and I got the adapter to run in SIM lite........briefly. When I stopped it and tried to restart it .....it didn't. When it was running, the traffic did not appear on the Network monitor.
When I check the Network Stats.... the IP data is shown for the Verizon connection
In the Network Information window, it shows that there is no MAC address. I tried to "renew" the info and I recieve and error message...."IP release  address failed with error 2, Err # is 0"
There is no DHCP server or Primary WINS server listed. Default gateway is 0.0.0.0

The Network information window in my program uses all Windows API's to read that data.
A lot of this could be due to the drivers you have installed as well.

So far we are seeing Windows, Wireshark, Winpcap and my program all having trouble with it. Have you checked if there is any updated drivers for the USB adapter?

I found that Windows cannot map the network for the USB modem? I reset all the network configurations to default and it still cant map the network.

Very strange. in 15 years of setting up networks I haven't seen this before. But of course USB network adapters are not very old either.

If you open a command window and type in ipconfig /all
does it show any network info for the USB?

Yes it does. The only thing I can see different than the ethernet adapter, is that it (the usb adapter) has no physical address. Its listed as a PPP adapter if that means anything.

I know windows treats PPP adapters differently, but I'm not sure on the how.

I'm not sure if I asked but what version of windows are you on? You said you had IPv6 so Im guessing vista or windows 7?

Reason why I ask is I want to Google winpcap & ppp adapters.

Ah, same problem another user had with his Dial up connection and my program. WinPcap doesn't support PPP connections.

http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/ftp.wiretapped.net/pub/security/packet-capture/winpcap/misc/faq.htm#Q-25

and a user with Win 7
http://www.winpcap.org/pipermail/winpcap-users/2010-February/003669.html

What thing you can use is my old CS Fire monitor. It uses the Windows API to read the adapters instead. That should be able to read the usb connection.

Good glad it works for ya :-)

I have started programming for the iPhone, Mac & Android so I have been a little slammed. But once I have some time perhaps a new version of my simple internet meter is needed. Have it use WinpCap for normal connections and the Windows API for PPP :-)

If your all set let me know and I will lock the thread.
