Ah I understand better now.
I sent that link of the cd to you to simply run the diag. apps to test your hardware was all, Im not sure what the other thing is your running into. I just wanted to get your drive tested :-)

Use the Microsoft memory test and make sure your good. And have you done the power reset yet?

Yesterday I did a POR and started the memory test running. The test ran for 16 hours (I forget how many passes, 19 perhaps) with no errors.

So now I'd like to get the UBCD to run diags on the hard disk. Can you help me get it? If you look back a few posts you'll see the problems I'm having trying to get it.

I will need to download the new version and try it out to see what happening and what you need to do to get to the hard drive test.

Do you know the mfg. of the hard drive? We could just grab the mfg tools. Like Seagate has Seagate tools.

It'll be awhile before I can power up the laptop to see disk brand and model. I've got it powered down right now -- more storms going on (today and tonight) and I didn't much care for what happened the last time when I left it up. I'm on the desktop right now (UPS) -- pretty much bullet proof since everything, including routers and modems run off UPS. I should be able to check sometime tomorrow and I'll let you know. I'd really prefer to get the UBCD since that would be more of a universal approach (I got a refund on the Acer but plan to get something else for the wife). So if I had the UBCD I could run it on any one of the three systems.

When you boot off the boot cd you should see a screen like this

What are you seeing when you boot off the cd?

Also the build in Windows chkdsk would work as well. Have it search for bad sectors and let it do its thing. It will repair what in finds. Then we can check the event log for the report. Any bad sectors then you should get the drive replaced.

We probably need to start over here. I guess I have not made myself clear.

I do not have the UBCD.

1. You sent me a link that would allow me to build the UBCD.
2. I copied my XP 'Restore' disc to my hard drive.
2A. I downloaded/unpacked/hash checked/etc. the UBCD build tool.
3. Ran the build tool. It failed because it required a file which I do not have -- the 'Restore' disc is just not the same as an XP CD.
4. There was a link (same site where you sent me to get the build tool) that supposedly would build an XPCD from a 'Restore' CD. Followed the link but although it said it has an English version, there was only a German version, which I couldn't use.

So here I sit. Seems like someone in this world probably has the UBCD and could just send me a link to their copy since it is touted as being free and to send out copies freely. So far I haven't found that person. Went to two other boards in addition to this one with no takers.

I am confused!

I downloaded the iso
http://pharry.org/data/redir_ubcd411.iso.php

Once downloaded I burned the iso to a disk using image burn.
Done, I am not getting what you are getting.

I am wondering if you grabbed the wrong file. I'm not sure at this point. But the link I just used above is a nice clean page, and the only link on it is for the iso.

I'm not sure but I don't think you ever pointed me to that site. That looks like it ought to be just what I need. I'm downloading it now and I hopefully will be able to burn it later today.

Once again I am in your debt. Thank you very much. As soon as I can test it I'll get back to you with results -- then maybe we will have a 'real' problem to work on (actually I'm hoping that's not the case). LOL

No that was a different link on the download page. I gave you a different one. What I think happened was the other page you went to must have listed other downloads besides the ISP. I think you just grabbed the wrong file was all :-)

SO this new link I thought would be better since there is only 1 file to download.

let me know how it goes.

I guess I don't know how this stuff works. I thought I was putting a BIG smiley face at the beginning of my last post, cuz I sure was smiling. However, it doesn't appear to have worked. Maybe there's a switch or something?

lol, run any tester. They all should test the sectors of the drive and report any bad ones. If they find a bad sector you need a new drive :-)

Ok, I'll do that later today.

How did you get that smiley to show up?
