Title: Portforward UDP for uTorrent fails to open
Post by: GerritBijsterbosch on February 26, 2014, 04:42:03 AM
I have a Cisco-EPC3925 (ziggo), in which I have to open both a TCP and a UDP port, according the uTorrent instructions. So I did, but only the TCP port seems to be open. But, that port is set open for uTorrent even without setting the router port accordingly! So, I wonder if things are set right.

I have read your instructions carefully, and set the router/modem accordingly. As it didn't work, I also have set the Static IP address, and updated the modem/router to that IP address. Again, without result. In uTorrent the status symbol is green, confirming the ports are open, but the Port Forward testing only shows the TCP port to be open. Secondly, at some P2P sites I am reported as "not connectable", which proves that the port forwarding is not correct yet. My operating system is Windows7, and I use Eset Smart Security.

As this problem is already making me crazy for months, I finally installed SPF, hoping that would make the problem disappear, but somehow it does'nt. I hope you can help out.

Thanks in advance,
Gerrit

#1 Forward the ports to your computer.

#2 Post 2 screen shots for us.

a) A screen shot of the port forwarding page in the router
b) A screen shot of the results of this port tester
http://www.pcwintech.com/simple-port-tester

(Or if on a Mac computer, A screen shot of the results of the simple-port-tester for mac.)

Lets go from there :-)

Make sure to close utorrent before you run my port tester :-)

The start and end port on the internal on the port forwarding page should be set as well, but looks like it may not need to be since the tcp port is working.

I do know a lot of antivirus software that comes with a firewall blocks UDP and that might be what is happening. What AV/Firewall do you have installed?

I use ESET Smart Security. But, I already tried if this application has any influance on the port forward, and it doesn't. I also tried the effect of adding the internal port (which your port forward application is not using), but that effect is also zero.

I attached some extra screen shots of other settings in the router/modem. Maybe that would give you an idea.

ESET Smart Security does have a firewall in it and is blocking UDP, have you tired it off and tried the port tester again?

Strange: If I switch off Eset security cpmpletely, UDP is still blocked. But, if I only switch of the firewall of Eset security, it works! Is there a setting in Eset which I can change, to avoid this blocking?

I dont use it so I dont know. But at least you know the port forwarding is working lol

I dont ever use firewall software other than the one in Windows. Why? Because a router is a hardware based firewall. So unless I need to block a program or I am not behind a router I have no need for a software based firewall.

OK Shane, thanks a lot for your assistance. I am glad you found the problem for me. I will find out what to do next: Ask Eset for a solution, or; remove the firewall of Eset and use the Windows firewall.

Thanks again,
Gerrit
