Title: Windows XP Server Computer - Internet Problems
Post by: Hyldran0 on November 23, 2012, 12:04:56 PM
Hello,

I took some old computers and made it a pretty good Server computer that i'm going to use to host a website and a Minecraft server.

I did a whole system clean and reinstalled Windows XP on it ( Service Pack 3 ).
Now i'v been trying to get my Internet to work on it for hours but can't get it working.

I have the integrated Internet Wired Connection and i also installed another just to make sure some of them works.
When i plug in the internet cable in the Motherboard it happens nothing it just says "Connected" but at 400Mbps, and thats to much to be true. Also i cant enter internet.

When i plug in the cable on the extra internet card it loads and then it says Limited or no connection something.

I really hate Windows XP when it comes to connection to internet...

Help me please.. :)

Regards
Hyldran0

#1 One end you plugged into your computer

#2 What is connected at the other end of that cable?

Did you also make sure you installed the correct network drivers?

In a router lol. If i plug that cable in my other computer it instantly work and internet goes in.

And Shane. The network drivers on the extra internet card did install automatic, i think.
And the one in the motherboard did also install when i started the computer for the first time.
But i can look around and look for drivers.

The fact that it said 400 mb tells me there might be a driver problem.

Also on the system can you make sure you dont have a static IP set.

Open a cmd.exe window and put
ipconfig /all

DO that with the network cable plugged in.

Post what it says and lets take a look

Very odd. Since it is old hardware have you ran some hardware checks? Also look for any bad sectors?

Yesterday, i installed a new copy of Windows XP on it, no problems there.

After installation i sat like 7-8 hours trying to get the internet working so i could check for updates and such.

There were alot of new hardware that needed drivers, but i just wanted the net to work first.
And the network drivers for both my motherboard and the new internet card were installed it said.

I did install a driver for my internet card that i found with the name i looked up on google.
I restarted my computer and then the login screen came up and i write my password and it just loads, then it cames up a windows saying logging off. then back to login screen.

So now i'm reinstalling Windows..

chkdsk /f /r

Do that when it is backup. It will say it cant and would you like to do it at next boot. Hit yes and reboot.

It will take a while to run. Sometimes Windows doesnt do it and you have to try it again. But once it is running it will check for any bad sectors.

With a fresh install there is no way it will have a static IP.

I have a feeling you might have bad sectors, as that would explain the very odd behavior. Bad memory would cause blue screens so I dont think that is the problem.

The chkdsk will take a while, maybe an hour or more. I will be off and on today so post when your done.

When it finishes the chkdsk it will post in the event viewer the results

Now when i restarted the computer, the internet stopped working..

"Acquiring Network Adress" it says a while now. Then it goes to "Limited or no connectivity".
And there is a yellow triangle on the network thing.

I got the internet working for a minute. but then i had to restard the computer and now it wont start again..

Tested to repair the internet. Just says "Renewing your IP adress" Then it goes "Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the folowing action cannot be completed: Renewing your IP adress."

Sounds like for some reason it isnt getting a IP from the router.

Did you try with both network adapters? It is possible one is bad.

The other one worked for a minute. So i don't see the problem..

It might be bad still. It is old hardware.

Also try a different network cable. And what connection speed does it show it at?

tryed 2 cables. nothing wrong with them. I can use them on this computer without problem.

The other card says 10Mbps and it also says Packets sent is 4 but received is 0.

Post by: Shane on November 24, 2012, 04:33:54 PM
Only 10 mbs? Is it a 100 mbs card?

When I have a card that isnt working right (Bad drivers or bad card, or bad cable) it will drop to 10 mbs since it couldn't connect at 100 mbs. And we know it isnt a bad cable.

It has to be the drivers.

I had this one system from a customer. Had a realtek network card. Almost every driver I tried Windows would take, it worked once then every time after that it would only connect at 10 mbs and not get online. When I finally found the right driver it worked.

If it is a store bought machine did you get the drivers from their website? I have a feeling we need ot make sure to get the right version.

The computer was bought at a store a while ago. But the other network card is bought and self installed into the comp. With no CD for drivers.
The motherboard network thingy should need drivers. but i don't have them i think.

I got this comp from a friend. and he said now that the motherboard internet worked fine like a month ago.
But the HDD crashed so he gave it to me. And i'v installed 2 new HDD's in it and so on.

He did have the CD for all the drivers for the machine but he trashed them a while ago.

Then what you need to do is download the newest drivers for either card, put them on a thumb drive and get them onto that system.

Put it in your system and test it. Hook the network cable to it and see how it does. If it works check what driver is installed for it.

Just about dinner time for me

That card is allready in my system and it was the card that was working but after i restarted my computer it did not.

Setup:
External Card = Realtek

Motherboard builtin card = 1394 Net Adapter

When i try to repair 1394 Net Adapter it says: "Failed to query TCP/IP settings of the connection. Cannot Proceed"
It also says 400Mbps.

It's not sending any Packets or anything. When i enable it, it says Connected. But cannot access internet.

I's 02:02 at me so it was bed time a while ago for me.. But i really want this to work.

But i think the drivers for 1394 Net Adapter is not working.

Like I said 1394 Net Adapter is not your network card on the motherboard. 1394 is a firewire adapter.

Go to the device manager. DO you have unknown hardware in there? You may just need to download the proper drivers for the motherboard network card.

#1 While I understand where you are coming from, it is possible to use firewire/1394 as a computer network.

I point to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_1394#Networking_over_FireWire

#2 By I understand where you are coming from:

a) See the reference at en.wikipedia.org that I pointed to.

b) I am not aware of any boxed router with a 1394 connection.

#3 By boxed router, I do not mean for example http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Exploring-DIY-Linux-Router-Distros-118897

Yes but the odds of him using the 1394 for network where very slim. So there was not point in making it harder than it needs to be to get it fixed.

So I knew it wasn't the one he was looking for. It was just a driver problem and he got it all fixed.
