Title: HP PC shutting down randomnly
Post by: zeron824 on May 02, 2012, 06:48:40 PM
Hey I am unfortunately back but fortunate to speak with the pros again!
Like I said, my HP PC just shuts down randomly. It also sound like a jet trying to fly away lately. Sometimes after it turns off, it doesn't trun back on unless I suck the juice out first then turn it on again.
Please help!

Motherboards will power off if the CPU gets to hot. And most cpu fans start blowing at full speed when hot.

So you have it shutting off, and the fans going full speed (Why it sounds like a jet), and you cant power it back on till it cools a little.

Have you checked the CPU temp yet?

I don't think I have yet. How do I do so?

Go into the bios and see if it has a hardware monitor. If it does it should show the temp.

Alright doing it now. What do I press for bios now?

HP might be F10

If it doesn't show the temp we can try to find a program that will show it.

I can't see the temp in the bios.

OK what model HP do you have and I will see if I can find a free program that will pull the CPU temp for it

All temps look great except the last one.

The video card temp is showing 99 c with is over 200 f.

But I dont think that is right, no way the system would even run with it that high lol But it is always possible.

Is the video onboard or a card?

it is an onboard. and yeah lol.

That might be the problem right there.

Keep the temp program open and run some video and see if the temp goes up. If it does you found the problem

It goes up to about 101 sometimes 102 :omg:.

I think you found your problem bud.

Open your computer tower and look at the board. Do you see any fans not running? If the motherboard has a fan for the video it will be a small fan on a chip on the borad. If it doesn't have a fan it will have a heatsink, perhaps it became lose.

Hmm everything seems to be running. And as far as I can see it, there are only 2 fans in my motherboard with one having a heat sink. Everything thing seems to be working. Is there anyway to figure out if my heat sink is broken? :omg:
And as I am typing this, I left the CPU cover off. Everything is NORMAL! But then it just started to blow again. Then relaxes once more. then goes again!

Attached is the pic before the fans are blowing much again.

The fans pick up speed based on temp. When you took the case off it was able to get cooler air flow.

If the heatsink is lose is the only thing to check.

Otherwise it is possible the motherboard is not reporting the temp correctly and is causing the problem.

How do I check the heat sink?

See if you can move it, not to hard. You shouldn't be able to

It is not moving.  What should I do now? Please help!

Nothing you can do about it. If it is shutting down due to high temps and everything is working then it might be a bad temperature mod on the board.

If you keep an eye on the temp see how long it goes before it shuts down. If you see the temp getting high right before shutdown then you have your answer.

Ahh thanks a lot. I am doing a little test right now to see if it will shut back down. I left my cover off and I am now using my PC and so far it has not shut down yet. Though, it does do that jet thing.

It has been running for almost 4 hours now!

Good, looks like you need to keep it cool.

This might seem odd, but try this trick.

Get a fan, big one if you have one and put it on high and point it right into the computer with the cover off. The extra air I bet will drop the temp.

I just want to see how low it can get it lol

Lol sure  I think I have one in the storage too. I'll report you any results.

This is the result with the fan blowing into the CPU (I just now placed the fan). Also, the PC was on since 9:42 AM and it is now 3:05 PM here. It has not turned off with the cover removed.  :omg:

LOL cut the temp in half :-)

Well now you know the problem.

Try to keep it cool and you should be fine :-)

Alright Shane! And also I just replaced my current 300W PSU to a 400W PSU to run my ASUS Radeon HD 5450. But can you help me get the drivers? Should it be from ASUS's website or ATI's? And DO I have to unplug the power from the old fan supply? I have two and the one with the heat sink is what I am talking about.

Get the drivers from ATI website and remove the old power supply and have everything hooked up to the new

Why does it still blow like a jet?  :omg:

Still running hot. It is the motherboard remember?

The fans blow at full speed as it gets hot. We got the temp down but not down far enough to where the fans will slow down. Once you have a new video card in you should see if you have an option to disable the onboard video :-)

Hmm oh yeah, I'm trying to find a way to disable it but I'm unable to. Do you know a way?

Only way is if the bios gives you an option. You can try disabling it in windows int he device manager.

Bios doesn't have an option. My bios is terrible lol. DO I just reset all of the Bios settings and that will do it?...and I accidentally uninstalled the drivers of the onboard card.  :omg:

Only option left is to disable the video card int he device manager and see if it helps

(This is why I hate store bought machines lol)

Hmm it is not there anymore.

Then it auto disables when you put in the new video card :-)

How are them temps?

The temps are low now. But it still sometimes blows too hard with the temps still on low. Maybe because its summer now?

Possible.

The system uses just air to cool itself. So the warmer the air the less cooling it gets
