Title: Simple way to lower explorer.exe ram use
Post by: shagger1 on February 08, 2012, 08:59:56 PM
Hi
Just found this by accident, explorer(not interet explorer) on my system was at about 30 megs,so I opened a folder(any folder) and minimized it to the task bar then my explorer ram use went from 30 megs to 4 megs! Is this a prroblem with something or did I stumble on a new trick?? My PC is running fine with no virus or trojans.
Rod
PS it also stays low as long as a folder is minimized-try it and see what happens..

Window's XP Explorer uses less memory when you have open windows minimized. This was changed in later versions. I believe (based off memory till I do some research) that Windows Vista (definitely Windows 7) frees up the memory by only allocating memory for the foreground window(s) while XP keeps it all in memory. Just as an experiment try this, hold down the Windows key (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_key) and try pressing the "D" key to bring up the Desktop and then alternatively try the same thing, except this time press the "M" key (to minimize all windows). If I remember correctly, the minimizing will have a greater affect than the "show desktop" as far as memory management goes.

Let me know what you see happen. I might not bet back to you till tomorrow, but let me know either way.

Hi
tried both and the ram use is lower when I open a window then minimize it-I forgot to say this happens only when connected to the internet-offline it has no effect on explorer ram use.anyway I found a good solution when I am surfing....as I dont want to add more ram to this older PC but I love the way XP feels so when this dies I will upgrade to windows 8.I still have a windows ME machine connected to a kvm switch but it is so slow but works great-I can test programs on it and have Quicktime(Yuk) installed because I have about 300 panoramas and Quicktime on XP bites, cant find a standalone QT VR Viewer that works on XP so.

Shane I Do!!!!

Just was wondering while online if I open a folder on my PC then minimize it my explorer ram use drops from 30 megs to 3 megs! Guess I will have to wait for Evan to reply.I love your program but only use it with firefox running as I only have 512mb of ram and firefox uses in exess of 115 megs-so there (grin)

Explorer normally tries to clean up after itself.

A lot of .net programs do this. Minimize them and their memory drops.

Its a Microsoft thing lol

Just end the processing which are not in use by going to task manager and select the processing and hit end to the programs which you don't want...
