Title: i need a program
Post by: SteveP on August 02, 2011, 08:55:35 AM
what would you guys suggest for this?  i need a program sorta like notepad mixed with contacts in windows.  i need to be able to put a persons name and number and email addy and be able to call it up relatively easily if they call back 6 or 8 months later. i would like to be abel to use their name OR number to call up the file i have on them. this would be for my boss and it needs to be really easy to use because hes not the most tech saavy guy in the world. thanks guys.

Tons of programs can do that. Have to find out you like.

I my self just use my email client Thunderbird. Its free and has TONS of free add-ons to give you more features :-)

A local church is a custom of mine, a few years back I made them a little database program to store names and addresses. I made it for free for them, only took me a day. Maybe I should redo it and put it out as a free little app?

Yeah I attached a screen shot of it (I blurred out addresses and phone)

Who knows, wouldn't take much to make a few changes to it and add it to my toolbox :-)

Once the new site tweaking.com is up and going maybe I will take an hour or so and put that app out there. Of course only if you or someone can use it lol

how hard would it be to add a line for email and one for notations and ....is the program searchable ...meaning say someone called me 6 months ago about a 71 cutlass fender and i had put it in notations section can i go in a search box and type cutlass or something like that or even type in their phone number to find my records about that conversation?...and if not how hard would it be to make that happen...i would love to be able to do what you do but i dont even know where to begin...im getting better at html and im starting to learn css but i dont even know what kind of language you use to write the kind of stuff that you are making.

Hit me up in a week or so about it and I can see what I can do.

Everything is stored in a access database and the program is a front end for it

I will be working on adding over 2 dozen pages to the site today. Then work with my partner on the site to get it fine tuned. I am hoping to have the site live VERY soon :-)

ok so what i need on the parameters if you can do it is this:

Name
Phone Number
E-Mail
Address

Items Needed
Part Number Needed

Year of Car
Make of Car
Model of Car
Engine Size of Car

Price Quoted
Notations

also i need it to be searchable if at all possible because like i said we go back many months even years in our paperwork looking up info on previous clients who have called wanting more stuff or want to know what the price we quoted them a year ago was and so on.

if this is too much for me to ask for and im overstepping your generosity let me know...you have already been a great help to me and i do not want to ruin any future relations

Looking over what you want, you know this could easily be done in an excel file?

Try this excel worksheet I made for you.

Whats nice about this is you have total control to add or remove more things you need for it, and of course you have all the built in tools of excel, including search

I just tried out the file. I have few ideas for adding an a program on top of the spreadsheet to better fit your needs. I'll have to look up some stuff and I'm a little strapped for time but if it starts in Excel then we are dealing in my territory.

Does your boss have Excel already?

Yeah, the edition you have is probably Microsoft Office "Starter" Edition. Go with a free full featured office suite.
