Some routers are better than others. But normally you wont notice to much speed between them. The internet speed comes from your ISP and what they can offer you.

But at the same time, some times there is a problem with your connection, like interference or something. Some routers handle these problems better and give you a better connection. Where the cheaper models don't and just give you headaches.

But if you want more speed, you are going to need to talk to your ISP

What you can do to make sure your current router is meeting the speed your ISP gives you is go to http://www.speedtest.net

A router/modem that is malfunctioning can slow your speed down

Also, if you using a wireless connection then quality of router starts becoming much more of an issue. Better routers can handle greater distance and more of a load better. That can really come into play if you are trying to connect many computers or devices and if you are doing things like streaming video or playing games online.

If you only use a wired connection then you won't notice as much of a difference.  Also, remember most every router handles communication with the internet and separately handles communication with the other computers in your home. Those are two different things (LAN and WAN) and sometimes a sales person can mislead you when talking about that.
