How set up router with wireless network adapter.
« on: December 02, 2009, 11:40:11 AM »
The area where we are going to install a security cameras don't have wire
internet modem. The only way to get internet is acroos to the wireless
network. We need to set up a Router to port forward couples aplications and
open some ports to permit watch the cameras on the internet.
Can you help with some ideas about this.
Thanks,

Well let me give you a basic idea of what you will need and do and then we can build off of it from there.

I take it the cameras support wireless?

For this lets say they do.

Your internet modem may be a router as well, does it have wireless? if so you don't need anything else (perhaps a wireless range extender depending on the location of the cameras to make the signal stronger.)

If you need a router then any wireless router will do, however buying the cheapest router is sure to just give you problems.

Now if the cameras do not support wireless and only support a wired network then you will need to get a wireless access point box for each of them. Basically the cameras plug into it with the wired cable and it in turn converts it to wireless.

Lets go from here, sorry if I didn't make perfect sense, just got home from a long day lol  :cheesy:

Thanks, Shane.
well, let me explain a little better the scenario.
The cameras are no IP or wireless. These cameras are connected (wired) to the dvr (PC). Normally when I do the connection I have :
An modem (that must be set up in bridge mode), the router that can be set up as Static IP or Dynamic IP (Router where I port forward a couple applications) and the DVR.
The new scenario consist of the Internet wireless adapter, then I need the router to do the port forward and the dvr.
I you have another idea please let me know. TK.

OK I understand better

So the cameras connect to the dvr, the dvr is in a location where it can not plug into the network. So we need to do wireless.

You will be able to do this by doing the access point like I said for the cameras but instead for the dvr.

So lets see if I can explain better.

Location 1
......Modem
...........Wireless Router
.
.
Location 2
.....Wireless Access Point
............Cameras & DVR

The wireless access point at location 2 will connect to the wireless from location 1. So just plug your dvr into the access point at location 2 and take care of all port forwarding at location 1.

This any better lol
