PLEASE HELP with ATT issue usb 3g
« on: September 30, 2009, 04:17:29 AM »
I am going crazy. We have a camera security software we use called alnet.  it uses port 9000 and it has been working for a couple of years.  client got a new laptop and an ATT 3g card.  This software uses port 9000 to access the server that is hosting the cameras.  It works. I can get to it using the wireless g or N built in card on the laptop but not the 3g. It gets on the internet fine.  Here is the kicker.  I can put this 3g card on any computer and it will not work (the camera software) but there is a demo version (a live camera built in the software that I can connect to also uses port 9000) but not our server.  I take out the 3g and use the wifi and it works fine.  ATT is of no help.
My question is.. I am thinking somehow the ATT network has a router in tracert that is blocking port 9000 somehow. Is there a way I can test this?  I can test for my open port 9000 no problem.. but I need a tracert with port 9000 specified in the route.
Any help would be appreciated

Mark,

Lets get you started.  I'm thinking that you might have a conflict with port 9000 since the new card/software is trying to use that also.  You might want to try using a different port if that isn't too much trouble.

Shane knows more about networking and he should be able to provide you more information.  Expect to hear from him later today.  I'll give him a heads up about this for you too.

I haven't had my coffee today so I might be missing something obvious, but I still wanted to give you some feedback so you know we are working on it.

Morning  ;D

Sounds like ATT is blocking the port to be honest. I haven't used ATT 3g but if it is like most other wireless internet then you are technically behind a giant private network. People cannot port forward or have any control. So opening ports is impossible. I know you shouldn't have to open port 9000, I'm saying that since 3g networks are very limited to the total bandwidth they can handle that heavy restrictions are put in place.

A good test to do, if you don't mind, is to open some more ports on your server for testing. Try to open port 80 (if your ISP on your server side doesn't block it). Try to open other low end ports as well port 40, 50, 81. and a few middle 200, 445, 600, and a few high ones 50000, 60000.

You can download my simple internet tools, put it on the server and use my port listener to listen on those ports for you. Then on a machine using the 3g install my internet tools, and use the port scanner. You should see some results and this should shed some light on whats going on.

If your camera server is a box by itself and you cant install software see if you can use another system there for the test.

The goal of the test is to see if ATT is simply blocking certain port ranges.
Then we can go from there with your findings.
