NetGear FVS124G
« on: August 14, 2009, 06:46:01 AM »
I have tried this router on both my desktop with XP Home and my laptop with XP Pro. It doesn't appear to want to work anywhere (big dummy, I thought it might work right out of the box). I currently have it hooked up: Laptop via Ethernet cable to Lan1 on Router, Router Wan via Ethernet to DSL Modem, and DSL Modem to phone line. All I get is 'Internet Explorer Can Not Display Page'.

I have not run any diagnostics. I have run the Roter Internal Setup.

Should I do any of that? Any thoughts? As always, any help is appreciated. Okay folks, time to save my bacon AGAIN.

I would like to get some screen shots, this will help me see whats going on a lot better.

First open a command window and put in ipconfig, let me know what it says. Then log into the netgear and take a screen shot of basic settings, WAN settings & LAN settings. If your internet IP shows up in them blur them out. But since your behind a dsl modem it should only be local IP's and you should be fine.

Shane, you might want to first look at the screen shots when I first installed the router (quite a while back). I uploaded a bunch (all there was to see (every screen)). After that then tell me which ones you want and I'll get 'em.

I'll try to get to ipconfig thing in a little bit.

I dont have those online yet, so I will use these as examples, take new screen shots of these pages in your router for me

Take new screenshots and post them, I want to look over your settings and see if everything looks good. Also dont forget the ipconfig info as well :-)

Shane, I attached the zip file from your program "Router Screen Capture". More than you asked for because it is all screens (32 I think). So it 'should' have everything you asked for. And here is cut/paste of the IPConfig:

IP Address 192.168.1.2
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.1.1

Let me know if I forgot something.

First off I want to say thanks, this router isn't in my program or on the site yet, I can now get it added :-)

Also I found your problem. On the attached screenshot from what you gave me you can see that both WAN 1 & 2 are down and have no IP info going to them, this si why the internet isnt working for you. So now we need to find out why they are not getting an IP from your modem. We need to check cableing first.

Any more info you can give me? What is your modem? what ports is the network cable from the modem to the netgear plugged into (on both ends)

Let me know. I will work on also getting your router added to my app as well.

Weeelll, when I took the screen shots I did not have a modem at all (had to put in back in the study for my wife). So that probably explains some things. Today I have a modem back so I'll try getting the screen shots and IPConfig again. Of course I'll have to disconnect the router and connect system directly to the modem in order to upload. Later today hopefully.

The cables are the same ones I have used all along -- don't think they have a problem. Hook-up: PC (via Ethernet) to Lan1 on router, Router Wan1 (Ethernet) to modem (DSL), and modem to phone line.

Thanks for getting the new screens up.  It looks like, even though the basic settings are right, that the router isn't "talking" with the modem.  The next thing I want you to try is switching the ethernet cable from WAN1 to WAN2.  Keep everything else the same and power cycle the Modem and Router.

That should tell us if the issue is with your WAN port.  Let me know if you are able to get internet access after that.

Also, if you can provide your modem model, we will need that info in order to accurately change some settings in the router.

-Evan

P.S.  It wouldn't hurt to try different cables if you have them.  I know they worked with the TrendNet but that router might be "smarter" in this respect.

Ok mac I know what the problem is now. Your netgear uses 192.168.1.1 but so does your modem. They cant both be using the same network range.

So easy to fix, log into the netgear, go to the LAN IP setup page (I have attached it) and change the lan ip to 192.168.2.1 instead. Of course also change the DHCP settings on the same page to be in the new range as well (so a total of 3 fields to change).

Apply the settings then you will need to release your ip on your system. so after that is changed go to your start button, go to run and type in cmd.

Once you have a command window open run these 3 commands after your netgear comes back up.

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /flushdns

ipconfig /renew

the reason for the flushdns is so windows will forget the ip of the DHCP (192.168.1.1) and pick up the new IP (192.168.2.1).

Let me know how that all turns out for ya.

Evan, I switched to WAN 2 -- samee samee.

Shane, I did all that you said. After I did the 3 ipconfigs I did just an ipconfig:
192.168.2.2
255.255.255.0
192.168.2.1

I am attaching a screen shot of the lan settings so you can check and make sure I did it right, because it sure didn't work. Same thing "Internet Explorer blah blah". I also did a power down and back up the router hoping that might help -- nope.

LAN ip settings look perfect, hook everything backup and see if the internet now works for you using the netgear.

Shane, that was the first thing I did after the power up/down, didn't work. However, I just now hooked everything back up, power up/down, and it still doesn't work.
