Monitor
« on: August 03, 2009, 03:25:00 AM »
I have a Gateway 505GR and I think my CRT Monitor is about to give up the ghost. I read a PCWorld article that said that the standard for a 19" LCD Monitor (I think this is what I want) was 1280x1024. When I start looking at monitors on-line I don't even see a 1280x1024, they all seem to run with a higher than 1280 but a lower than 1024. Could someone shed some light on this (please use little words, I don't know squat about monitors)?

I also see some monitors that are refurbished -- any thoughts on this would be appreciated -- cost would be a BIG factor for us.

We do a little surfing but mostly we use AOL, Yahoo, Poker sites, and Pogo (just so you have an idea of what we might need), BTW no action games (if that's relevant).

All help appreciated.

Mac

these are the ones I use, Hanns-G come with 3 year warranty

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010190020%2050011143&name=Hanns-G

and as you can see good prices.

When it comes to the screen resolutions it all depends whats good for you. But in this case for what you use it for I wouldn't worry about the screen resolution, get a monitor you can afford and you should be fine :-)

Mac,

That article you read from PCWorld is probably a little old because that resolution is for a 4:3 screen ratio (in other words it is not widescreen).  With the old CRT monitor's they tend to have range of resolutions that you can choose from, while the LCD monitors are designed to run at a single "optimal" resolution.  Widescreen monitors have almost completely replaced the standard (4:3) resolution.

Knowing that info might help you pick one out if you decide to shop around.  If you want to spend the least amount there are a few blogs and tracking websites out there that catch great deals almost weekly.

As far as if action games are relevant...I would say that is only relevant if you are going to be using the monitor for anything that is "action packed" meaning TV, Movies, High End Gaming, etc..

Let us know if you need any other info, we'll be glad to help.
