Remote Desktop
« on: July 27, 2009, 04:59:04 AM »
Hey All

I am looking for a remote desktop app. with the following features:

Installs the service on the client machine.
Ask the user of the client machine for permission. eg accept connection

I know that Dameware does all of this.
But is there another solution that is free?

give www.teamviewer.com a try. It is free for personal use.

Team viewer seems to be a cool app.
I am a helpdesk tech for quite a few users in a financial and secure building.
I am looking for an app to assist them remotely.
It is a real mission running back and forth.
So far Dameware is the only app I have found that works on both XP and Vista.
We tried SMS (System Management Server) from Microsoft but it does not connect to the Vista machines.

Teamviewer is the simplest application I can suggest...but, like Shane said, it is free for personal use.  You might want to give it a try and see what you think and look at purchasing it for office use.

I'm not familiar with the other options you mentioned so I can't really give my opinion there.  Whatever you decide to use I'd like to hear about it.

Take care.

To me a remote app is a remote app. The only reason I like teamviewer is the fact there is no port forwarding needing to be done to make it work. It contacts their servers to make the connection. So when your helping someone you don't need to go through the pain of trying to get a person to open the ports they need.

And of course helping people with port forwarding that's not working you can see where this comes in handy lol
