Problem with port forwarding when using a static IP
« on: June 21, 2009, 11:57:20 PM »
I'm using a NetGear WNDR3300 and Simple Port Forwarding v2.4.7

This seems very strange to me and I'm not sure exactly what the problem is. The port forwarding works fine when I have my IP set as dynamic, but when I change to a static IP, the port forwarding does not work anymore. I am using the built-in tester to determine if the port forwarding is working or not.

I checked to make sure that the "Set your computer's IP to static" part of the program is working properly and it is. I checked the properties of my wireless network and checked the IPv4 properties and it works perfectly when i use the "Set your computer's IP to static" command.

So why doesn't my port forwarding work when I have my IP set to static? Thanks.

First, when you set your

First, when you set your computers IP to static are you updating the port forwarding rule to the new IP? Then saving and rebooting the router?

I have helped a few users with some routers that simply refused to work with a static IP. it was a bug in the firmware, but it was a different brand.

Some routers can be picky. Take my netgear for example, when I delete a port forwarding rule of one port and try to add it again to a different IP it doesn't work until I reboot the router. For some reason it has trouble letting go of the old IP.

So the rule of thumb is to make sure all settings are saved in the router and then reboot it. This way it lets go of any old settings it might be holding on to.

And of course make sure it is pointing to the new IP :-)
