test inbound block for port 25
« on: January 28, 2012, 10:52:35 PM »
Hi guys,

After a lot of research on trying to get a email serever set up i finally found that i am able to telnet other sites from my computer on port 25. That is outbound port 25 is not blocked.
However when i go to can you see me.org and check if it is blocked it says that it is. Is there any way i can find out where my port is being blocked(i have port forwarded, switched off anti virus firewall and tried too). I suspect that it is beacuse of my isp blocking inbound port 25. But how do i confirm this as my isp keeps saying they do not block port 25. One more thing- Will i be able to recieve mails if port 25 is blocked but the pop and imap ports are open?

One way to test if they block port 25 is this.

Setup a port forwarding rule for port 25 and then another port, say 1979.

Now download and use my port tester program. Make sure your email server is closed so my tester can use the ports.

If 25 fails but 1979 works then your ISP blocks the port

yep. POrt 80 seems to show an attempted connection but not port 25. That means my isp must be blocking it right? Just one more question- If my port 25 is blocked will i not be able to recieve mail as pop3 and imap operate on ports other than 25 and they are for incoming and not port 25 which is only for outgoing -or am i mistaken here.

Yes you can use any port you want. Just when you setup your email client you tell it what port to use

so does that mean irrespective of whether my port 25 is open or closed i should still be able to recieve mail?  Because  till now i thought that the reason i was not able to recieve mail was because of the blocked port 25 )

my pop3 and imap operate on ports 110 and 143 which seem to be open. I should be able to recieve mail if these are open right?

Should be able to. Once the ports are open the rest is all in the email server settings
