Unable to Open UDP Port
« on: January 24, 2012, 04:38:17 PM »
I am attempting to connect with remote servers on the Hyerlobby client website for the purpose of gaming with the Il2 Sturmovik 1946 flight simulation software.  When trying to join these servers, I continuously get a timeout error message.  The Hyperlobby client uses both the TCP and UDP ports number 21000.  I have attempted to set up exceptions in both the router (Verizon FiOS Actiontec M1424-WR) and in Norton Internet Security 2012.  I have set up the lowest level of security on the router.  I have also set up exceptions in the Windows firewall (disabled).  I have tested the port forwarding with your Simple Port Tester and consistently get a positive report for the TCP port and a negative report for the UDP port.  Any help would be appreciated.

The norton blocks UDP (They call it UDP flood attackes)

Try disabling norton and see how the port tester does

I know Verizon doesnt block UDP. Did you also make sure the Windows firewall is disabled?

Good, setup a port forwarding rule to it, say 1979 both TCP and UDP.

Run the port tester on it and post the results

OK, both ports are open on the laptop as confirmed by port tester.  I set up the ports in the router only.  Windows firewall is active, but I do not have Norton IS.  The antivirus on the laptop is a McAffee product.

Can Norton be completely removed so it no longer causes problems?

Got rid of Norton and installed MS Security Essentials, but same problem exists - UDP ports not open.  Puzzling!

I wonder if you have any left over firewall software.

Enable Windows firewall and make sure my port tester is allowed through

Windows firewall enabled.  Port tester indicates success for TCP ports and failure for UDP ports.

Try my detect possible firewalls (Have it hide MS services)
http://www.pcwintech.com/shanes-toolbox

See if it shows anything.

We know the problem is on the system so lets cover all the bases
