PuTTY & OpenSSH
« on: January 23, 2012, 04:12:22 AM »
Hello,

So, I am running the Windows version of OpenSSH on my Windows XP machine at home. I am attempting to connect to it using PuTTY, but every time I do, I get this error:

PuTTY Fatal Error
Network error: connection refused

I looked up the error, and I found that it means that the server has refused connection with the client, usually because the service (SSH) isn't supported. Well, it is supported.

I have port forwarded 443 and changed the config of OpenSSH to transmit over 443, mainly because most networks have 443 open.

Also, I cannot seem to ping the computer while I'm on my network for whatever reason.

Does anyone have a solution to this?

(PS: I have used this computer before as a Minecraft server, so I know a server can be hosted on it)

When connecting ot your self are you on the same machine or trying out side your network?

If your trying from the same machine as the openssh server are you using your local IP or internet IP?

No, I've tried it inside my network on a different machine and outside my network.

Reason why I ask is because your router may not like reverse nat
http://www.pcwintech.com/test-for-reverse-nat

So when your on the same network as the server you need to use the local IP. When outside your network you will use the internet IP.

Since using the local ip on the same network you take the router out of the equation.

Then if it works locally then you know it is a router or ISP problem. If it also fails then you know it is something with the server or system it is on.

Okay, I just tried it form inside my network (from another machine) using the internal IP rather than the external. I got this error after about 20 seconds or so:

Network error: Connection timed out

The PuTTY window didn't display anything in that 20 second period, and I couldn't type anything in.

Also, for reference, this is the tutorial (two part) that I used to set up the server. I am on a x32 Windows 7 for the client and a x32 Windows XP for the server:

OK so it isnt working locally. Did you check your firewall software that it is allowed through?

Do you mean the firewall on the router or on the server computer?

Since it is local test right now the router isnt even part of it. So check any firewall software that  you have installed on the system

It doesn't look like its an exception on my Windows Firewall, so I tried to add it, but there doesn't seem to be any kind of .exe that I can add.

It's not an .exe. I'm running it using "net start" from cmd.

You can try turning off the firewall.

The net start command is starting a service, which is a exe look for opensshd

Okay, I disabled the firewall, and it works! Is there a way to unblock a service like OpenSSH(d)? I don't want to have to leave my firewall down.

Check in the registry for opensshd

The service keys should show what exe it is running.

Sorry, I'm a total n00b when it comes to the registry  :shy:

I've opened regedit, but I don't really know where to go from there.
