DDNS updating outside of router
« on: January 06, 2012, 02:02:15 AM »
Hi,

I have a problem that I have been racking my brains over for weeks. Hope that the experts here can help me!

I have a device with a static IP address that I need to connect to when I am outside.
My router is 2wire, which is known for the following:
1) no ddns update
2) unable to detect devices that have static IP address and hence cannot do portforwarding on these devices.

For (2), i hope that the simple portforward software will work, but I have yet to try it out. Will post here on it's success/failure.
For (1), I have a dyndns account, but since the router do not update dyndns with the dynamic address, I am at a loss as to how to access my device when I am outside.

I cannot change my router as it is both a modem and a router and provides for my cable channels and phone lines.
It is not an option for me to leave a computer on all day to run a ddns update client on it since i do not own a desktop.

Please, whoever has any solution, please help!!! I am desperate!!

Thanks in advance.

Yunen

Just install the DDNS windows software. You will need to have your computer on to have it update but at least it would still work.

Also the 2wire does port forwarding by computer name, or you can tell it what IP. SO you should either be able to not have to use a static IP or just specify he static IP for the port forwarding :-)

Hi Shane,

Thanks for your reply.

So, there's really no other way but to install the DDNS update client on my comp and leave it on all the time? Sigh...

Also, I don't seem to be able to portforward on the 2wire modem. Downloaded simpleportforwarding and tried to portforward but to no avail...

My router is 2wire-2701HGV-E (Singtel Firmware) which is available in the router list, but portforwarding doesn't seem to work. Do you need me to send you the screenshots to verify?

Just let me know the screens you need...

Thanks for your help.

Might be a good idea to get another router that supports DDNS (Netgear or Linksys). Hook it to the 2wire and have all the systems plugged into the new router.

Then put the 2wire in bridge mode or http://www.pcwintech.com/how-setup-two-or-more-routers-together-port-forwarding-port-triggering

Then that should take care of the DDNS updating and make port forwarding easier.

Thanks for the suggestion. But will using the 2wire as a bridge only affects my phone line and TV? Currently both the phone line and cable TV set-top box are directly plugged into the 2wire.

Do they both simply stream through the internet?

It shouldn't affect anything if they do as they will still be online

Hi Shane,

Just thought you will like to know but I manage to do portforwarding on the static IP address on 2wire!!!

I'm not sure whether it is a new firmware, but the screen capture seems to be different from the one you posted on your site; so I thought you will like to know.

I found 2 ways of doing portwarding actually:

1) Under choose a computer to add user-defined application; there is now an additional option where I can enter in any static IP address.
Or
2) I can go to Broadband -> DNS resolution, and add a name for my static IP address and then under Firewall I can see the device and edit the settings accordingly (i think)

Hope that will help those having trouble portforwarding their static IP devices!

But I'm still stuck at the update DDNS part. Guess I have no choice but to either buy another router or leave a computer on all the time...

Glad you got the port forwarding working. The static Ip part of the port forwarding is what you needed. I think the firmware update did the trick for you
