« on: January 03, 2012, 03:38:01 AM »
Hi, sorry to bore you to tears with yet another network problem with the TP-link WA500G,  ive spent days trying to get the thing to work before posting this. I have read the previous threads on this forum about the WA500, which have helped......... but ive still got a problem..
Im now close to breaking point!

Im trying to use a WA500G in client mode connected to an Xbox360 with a LAN cable,  i want to connect to the internet via a D-Link router located in another room, dispite considerable effort all im getting is
Error: Your DNS server can't resolve Xbox LIVE server names'

If i post some screen shots showing the settings ive used, Im sure you guys could spot my mistake!
Could someone take a look please?

So you have the xbox behind 2 routers?

Go ahead and post some of the setting you have setup and we will start from there.

Hi, thanks for posting

Yes, the Xbox is behind two routers, the TP-Link is connected to the Game console via a LAN cable, in Client mode, so using it as networking adapter really.

Ive posted some screen shots, hopefully to can see where ive gone wrong, i must admit i do find network configuring difficult!!

Thanks :cheesy:

Ok now post a screen shot of the port forwarding page in the router.

Also what IP address does the xbox have?
In fact give me all the network info for the xbox

Thanks Shane.
The network settings i have in the Xbox are..
IP address 192.168.1.100
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Gateway     192.168.1.254
These are automatic settings, theres an option for manual configuration.

PORT FORWARDING PAGE FOR THE ROUTERS? ..which router? as i can find a port forwarding page in either!
Could they be named something else? :shy:

THANKS

OK there is the problem.

Your xbox is getting 192.168.1.xxx

But your main router is 192.168.0.xxx

This is because the xbox is getting its IP from the wireless access point.

We need to have the wireless access point setup in a bridge mode so the xbox will get its IP from the main router.

Post screen shots of the network and wireless pages in the TP link and I will see if I can tell which setting you need to change

OK instead of client mode try Repeater or bridge

Once your xbox gets and ip of 192.168.0.xxx then you should be good to go.

Just make sure UPnP is enabled in the main router and you wont need to worry about port forwarding :-)

Hi Shane, thanks for the advise

I tried it in Repeater, Universal Repeater & Bridge Mode (checked AP mode & unchecked)  and im still getting the same message
Error: Your DNS server can't resolve Xbox LIVE server names'
UPNP is switched on in main router,
Also restarted routers, returned Xbox to factory default network settings and tryed automatic settings again.

Ive attached a couple more screeen shots.

Any more thoughts?

Thanks for your help

What IP address is the xbox getting now?

Perhaps you need to turn DHCP off in the access point as well

Hi Shane.
I tried all wireless modes with DHCP turned off in main router..still same result/error
Xbox shows
IP address as 192.168.1.100
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.1.254

Noticed these settings in Xbox.
Secondary DNS server 0.0.0.0
Advanced settings
PPoE  ....not set
Host name .....not set
Alternate Mac address ...not set

What do you make of that :shy:

Couple more screen shots if it helps!

thanks for your help

NO, DHCP needs to be ON in the main router and OFF in the TP-Link

Point is that the TP link is handing out an IP. We don't want it to. We want the modem to hand out the IP's only.

Set the TP-Link to repeater mode and turn its DHCP off.

Hi Shane

Sorry for my delayed reply.

Ok, ive restored the settings in the main router, DHCP is now ON, and OFF in the TP-link.

Trying bridge /repeater mode, it fails at an earlier stage 'cant obtain an IP from router 0r moderm'

But the xbox auto detected a different IP 169.254.238.32 ..  Where's that come from?  :shy:
